He climbs out of the strange box sitting atop the narrow table and gently shakes his head. His mind is slightly foggy and it takes a moment to realise where he is. He pushes his frames further up his nose and takes a look around the room. He spots the collection of flowers by his feet, the black and white framed photograph sitting to the left and the small gathering of people dotted about the pews.

There is a boy -a boy- slumped on the floor just behind the couch. He looks small, young. Nicky doesn’t think he can be much older than five. He’s got warm olive skin, messy light brown curly hair and big grey eyes that look terrified.
“Where the hell did the kid come from?” Nicky is pretty sure Andy is talking to herself but he’d like to know too. Nile recovers first and makes her way towards him. He sits up slightly straighter as he looks around, his eyes catch on Nicky and he bolts up and sprints straight towards him. Nicky catches him on instinct and the boy clings onto his shirt.
“I didn’t mean to Papa, I'm sorry. It-it was accident, I’m sorry..” the kid trails off, tucking his head under Nicky’s chin and clinging on for dear life. Nicky’s eyes snap up to meet Joe’s instantly and he looks just as confused as Nicky feels. Joe mouths Papa?

“The tall man helped us so we didn’t fall anyway so we’re fine..see!” She spreads her arms, lifting Nikolai’s arm in the process while keeping the big toothy grin on her face.
“Did he now.. well, let me thank him for saving my wayward children and we’ll be on our way, yeah?” She nods and he rises from his crouched position and turns to face himself and Nicky. “Thanks for-” The smile drops from his face instantly as he sees who it is.
“Booker?” He practically breathes the name out as he stares at the man he hasn’t seen in almost seven years. The man they’ve been looking for for almost three years and had started to worry was actually dead.
“You’re alive..” Booker flinches at Nicky’s words and stands protectively in front of the kids. Wait.. the kids.. the kids that called him dad. The kids he called his children. What the fuck?

Here is an utterly self-indulgent selection of further rescues through the ages, complete with 16th-century literary tropes and everyone involved being a complete dork, because I'm writing the fanfiction I want to see in the world.
