    Summary

Gwayne doesn't think he has been a bad son, not really, not the way that some boys are. Loud, angry, violent boys who bite other children and scream and kick. Boys who are ungrateful, who do not say their prayers, who do not love their families.

And yet they are all leaving him anyway. One way or another.

Snapshots of Gwayne and Ormund's relationship from childhood to adulthood. Some are sweet. Many are not.

    Summary

Uncle Gwayne leaves Oldtown, and over the course of many months, Ormund exchanges more letters with him than Daeron has ever exchanged with his own mother. He cannot imagine what they have to say, as they rarely saw eye to eye, and Ormund oft used Gwayne as a proverbial scratching post more often than not.

He does not think that his cousin and uncle have ever been apart this long in their entire lives, so perhaps they do not know how to not talk.

Daeron wonders if Gwayne is happy out there in the world, free at last.

...and he wonders if Ormund resents that.

    Summary

    "You could do it."

They both know it is an impossible fancy. That Gwayne should knight Daeron, that he should change or leave a mark upon him of any sort at all. Ormund will never allow it. That is a prerogative reserved solely for himself.

The man has staked a claim in Daeron’s life, a life which is now carefully managed so that the Lord of the Hightower may be the cornerstone in every decisive moment — indeed, practically every thought that enters Daeron’s head. They march, the three of them, according to Ormund’s vision, Ormund’s plan. Even if it is toward ruin. However much he loves the boy, Gwayne will only ever be at best a visitor and at worst, an interloper in that plan.

The summer he turns ten-and-six, standing at the precipice of manhood, Daeron finds himself drawn into a strange pas de deux with his uncle. As Gwayne tries and fails to keep them both above water, the rules that have governed their relationship begin to unravel — very slowly, then all at once.

At the rotten core of it all is Ormund.

He sees it then—the look in Ser Criston's eyes, the look he's seen in many a man-at-arms who has ventured a guess towards what Gwayne might be, what he might provide on a cold dark night on a long campaign.
