This was written for the "Our Flag Means Death Remix 2025". It was inspired by the charming and delightful "If I Were a Bell, I'd Be Ringing" by Deniz_B. Their title came from a Guys and Dolls song, and so does mine (mine is from "I'll Know"). Whereas their story was written from Ed's perspective, mine is written from Stede's.

There was a book in the corner of the ball room. A fucking...book. On Blackbeard's ship. Izzy was meant to have gotten rid of all of the fucking books, he'd given Izzy a fucking order. Somewhere between furious and terrified, he clambered over to the book and snatched it up.
The book was oversized, huge, and bound in a cover that was elaborately dyed to resemble...Ed didn't know, some kind of fancy fucking pink rocks or whatever. He cracked it open to the title page.

The figurines catch Stede's eye, halfway down the hall to his- their cabin. They're propped up together, side-by-side, next to his mini-Revenge. He picks both the two little figures up, pinches them between his pointer and thumb in each hand. His brow furrows as he raises them up to his face, examining one of them.
A tiny blond groom stares back at him.

The dread pirate Blackbeard is completely colour blind and an infamous part of a resistance movement against the Chromatocracy: elite rich and powerful who get their status from how much of which colour they can see.
Stede Bluebonnet is a wealthy Chromatocrat. Despite being able to see Blue, which makes him just one step down from Violet-seeing royalty, he inexplicably decided to abandon his live of privilege and join the resistance in the Greypublic of Pirates.

Stede wanders over to a Kiosk to get a tea, taking a seat by the window to stare outside and figure out what to do next. Eat? There’re several shops at the station that serve dinner and the pasta from Julia’s looks tempting, but Stede’s not feeling hungry right now. He takes out his phone, fiddling with the NS travel app to figure out his options.
“Couldn’t get on the bus either?”
In which Stede is stranded at the train station and tries to get on a replacement bus, but gets distracted by a handsome stranger.
