Summary
When Mike first filled out the paperwork, he didn’t know if anything would come of it. He’d just arrived back in Ithaca after a spring break visit to the city. His neck was stiff from the weird nap he’d taken on the bus. It was snowing, in April. He didn't even have any friends to call up and announce his return, unless you counted his roommate, Jeremy, who greeted him with an indifferent head nod and a “hey, man” when Mike spilled through the door of their dorm room, shaking melting snowflakes out of his overgrown hair.
He trudged across campus the next day, past dirty iced-over snow drifts that seemed like they might never melt, and knocked on the door of his advisor’s office.
“If I wanted to transfer to another school next year,” he said, fidgeting with his backpack in his lap as he sat down in the squeaky vinyl-backed chair, “how would that work?”

Summary
Will has been living a totally normal life since the Upside Down was closed two years ago–it’s just been school, homework, art projects, hiding the giant crush he’s had on his best friend for the past several years, and even working at Melvald’s to help carry his own weight in the Byers-Hopper household. It’s his junior year, and everything is going fine.
That is, until someone tries to ask Mike to prom in the office supplies aisle of Melvald’s during one of Will’s afternoon shifts. It sends his world spinning off of its axis, and he realizes there’s a little creature that lives somewhere in between his stomach and chest that likes to roar and claw at his insides. Some people might call it jealousy.

Summary
My contribution to MerMay.
Will was just trying to keep his head low and his bills paid. The job at the Research Center for Ocean Life was easy, quiet, and it kept food in his belly. Everything was going well until he saw something in the Deep Sea enclosures he couldn't explain.
**
His sneakers slid across the soap, making him windmill his arms and for a moment, the safety training video he’d watched a few weeks prior played on a loop in his head, scolding him for not wearing no-slip shoes.
“No. Nope. No fucking way,” he panted through chattering teeth as he found his footing and leaned his back against the door.
He kept his eyes locked on the enclosure, waiting for the light to show up again or for his mind to come up with a better explanation than there was a fucking alien in a tank less than a hundred feet away from him. He waited almost half an hour before he found his nerve and crept back to retrieve the mop. He didn’t bother to clean the glass, justifying it with the lack of time he had left in his shift rather than the queasy feeling in his stomach and uncomfortable, primal fear of being confronted with something he had no logical explanation for.

Summary
As children, their height difference had always been something that made Will’s stomach flip-flop in that familiar, weightless manner. Fluttery, before he had ever known what it meant.
Mike would never loom over him, ominous and terrifying like adults were.
Now, with a few years and a handful of growth spurts between them, the difference isn’t as obvious. If Will stood up at full length, he’d meet Mike’s eye with ease. But Will has never learned how to control himself around Mike. So he makes himself smaller, without really meaning to.
or:
Four times someone points out Will acting weird around Mike, and the one time Mike asks him about it.
