Erik replies with the hint of a smile, “Then you’d consider yourself an exception?”
“I’d consider myself terrible at being a demon.”
Erik laughs. The sound echoes through the air, inhuman yet not built to instill fear. It’s genuine. Charles laughs with him, though he is sure the sound of his own is reminiscent of a crackling fire, rather than windchimes.

He finds her in the courtyard of the X-Corp Building. The shadow of the brand-new steel provides a respite from the burning tropical heat. It’s the only spot in Genosha these days that seems to be fully cleared of the rubble. Instead, a lush garden has replaced the mangled steel and broken concrete. Out of ashes, new life is born. It feels a little on the nose to Charles, but it’s hard to lodge a complaint when he wasn’t even there.
