Curiosity getting the better of him, Clavell looks down to find—... Ah. Good heavens. What should be perfectly adequate mourning attire is thrown into disarray by a pair of hideously clashing brown dress shoes. His brow furrows and his lips press into a firm line, almost of their own accord... though in the end he can't bring himself to speak his criticism aloud.
The funeral of an old colleague leaves Clavell with a heavy heart. When Jacq goes to check on him he tells of his sorrow—and how it connects to his fellow once-researcher.
