Summary
Amon wanted to strangle the ghoul until every flicker of life drained from eyes that were already dead. Until the ghoul decided to fight back and pinned him to the floor instead. Until a brilliant rinkaku was hanging over him like a death sentence.
The kakuja's mouth was already open slightly to breathe and he only scoffed before smirking, "is that how you remember that? Amon?"
His name may as well have thrown him into an ice bath, but he couldn't stop himself from staring at the ghoul's lips as they formed his name.
The kakuja had no right to be more alluring than anyone Amon had ever seen.

When Amon finds the eyepatched ghoul deep in Kanou's lab, he knows he can't ignore the opportunity to get the answers he has been searching for his entire life.
Amon chases Kaneki after he bolts; in his crazed state, Kaneki causes them to get trapped in a small section of the tunnel, when he eventually comes back to himself, Amon is left with little reason to continue to feign hostility towards the ghoul—they inevitably get to talking, and Amon struggles to come to terms with the answers he gets.
