He hears a choked noise, whipping his head around to peer over his shoulder, but Kim's in the same spot she's been for the past half hour. She's sitting in the passenger seat facing the open door, her bare feet grazing the ground, as motionless as the plaster cast encasing her arm. A cigarette dangles loosely from her lips, the ember flickering dully in the light breeze, and the shadows beneath her eyes are so black they're blue, almost the same color as the bruises marring the left half of her face.
Must have been his imagination; Kim doesn't cry. Not even over this. But God, he wishes she would.

Summary
But perhaps the biggest change in Jamie that she’s noticed over the past few months has nothing to do with hormone replacement therapy or a new wardrobe. It’s her eyes. They’re no longer the blue-gray of a trembling lake, moonlight reflecting from the still surface while melancholy lurks in the depths, always there but just barely out of sight. They’re now a muted sapphire brimming with light and laughter, like waves crashing on a summer beach, warmly washing over her.
After all these years, her Jamie is finally, truly happy, almost unrecognizable from the miserable man she was forced to be.

Summary
She wants to push him for an answer. She wants to tell him that she knows about the mug, that she knows about the hole punched clean through both sides. She wants him to confess and weep into her shoulder, finally crying all those tears he’s been holding in ever since he lost his brother. She wants him to rest his head in her lap so she can comb her fingers through his hair, listening intently as he explains the bullets, the sunburns, the gouges in his shoulders. She wants to take him to bed even though it’s not yet noon, gently spooning him from behind. She wants to plant feather-light kisses against the nape of his neck, mumbling reassurances, telling him that everything is going to be alright.
But she doesn’t do any of that, because that’s not how he works; it’s not how they work.

Summary
Jimmy already knew there was no escape from the tragic looks from his parents and the bragging from some of his friends and the empty platitudes from everyone at church. Maybe Jimmy wished he was the one who would melt into the carpet. It seemed like God had already decided there wasn’t anyone out there who would really, truly miss him anyway.

Summary
Very quickly Jimmy becomes reacquainted with the hairdryer. Having not needed it himself for more than a few minutes at a time the way he wields it now feels like a foreign object.
Kim’s reflection follows the movements of his hands with critical eyes, carefully avoiding her own image. Luckily the real Kim mostly blocks his view of the mirror as he slowly orbits her, allowing him to focus on the task at hand, the strands that rise from dark bronze to gold.
