Scott doesn’t often get stopped in his tracks by guys he sees. He doesn’t really ever get that birds-dancing-round-his-head, sweet-chorus-of-angels, crepuscular-rays-alighting-on-the-earth knockabout, or hasn’t really since Mike Johansson transferred into St Thomas in senior year of high school and he had, for the first time in his life, fallen in love. Unrequited, but still. That was fifteen years ago. He’s been in love since then, but he hasn’t been blindsided in a while. He’d forgotten how it feels.

Scott crossed the third item off the list he'd found in the trash a few weeks ago, written in Kip's unmistakable scholarly scrawl. Why Kip had tossed it was not something Scott wanted to think about right now, or frankly ever, but he was glad he'd found it.
Because now Scott had months worth of potential date ideas to surprise Kip with. Although he'd have to be careful about it. Subtle. Not just go down the list of items that Kip had so carefully written out, likely having selected each idea from his brilliant mind over the past three years, since a blue and a black pen had been used, and the paper was stained in more than one spot.
... Anyway, Scott had lovingly dubbed the list "Kip's Relationship Bucket List," or "KRBL" for short. (Rhymes with gerbil. Duh.)

"Scott? Uh, hello," Kip taps his coffee mug on the counter, startling Scott out of his reverie.
"Sorry," Scott apologizes. "What?"
"Is there... A reason you're stroking Maldita's collar?" Kip asks softly.
Scott drops it like it's burning hot. "N-no. No reason."

“He’s all bark and no bite, really. He’s a good dog.”
Carter snorts. “Really?”
“Nah, he’s good.”
Scott lets himself imagine, if just for a second, being Kip’s dog. He can feel a phantom collar around his neck. Kip’s hand is still in his hair. His chest feels warm and he’s so so glad Carter and Kip are looking at the TV, not at him. He wills himself to appear normal because he’s sure the way his heart is thumping, the heat in his face, the giddy desire to do whatever Kip asks, even to be his dog if he wanted, isn’t normal.
