Summary
My father always told me “strive to be excellent in everything that you do.” Which is how I found myself in feudal(ish) Japan, taking what was essentially a high school placement exam in a magical ninja school. Question four read “Can you explain Einstein's Theory of Relativity?”
Or: everything I needed to know about succeeding in magical ninja school (I learned in ninth grade)

Summary
“Grace,” Myrta began gently. “What do you have there?”
Grace paused, before extending the object to them instead. It was a plain tube, no bigger than a single claw-digit, with an unidentified smear of... something, resting at the bottom. “Staaar-eat.”
“‘Star-eat’,” Theodor moaned as they picked themself back up. “‘Star-eat’, it says. You let a hatchling into a lab for λλ seconds and it finds unsecured star-killer rolling around the back of a drawer. A single micron from that tube could vapourize the space elevator so thoroughly they wouldn’t even feel a speck of us landing down below.”
“Ah, geez. I should’ve expected that."

Summary
The engineer takes my hand. His skin runs hot. Very hot. He doesn't let go at what I would gauge as a socially-acceptable handshake time interval. Are we just holding hands in the middle of the lab-workshop space? Guess we are.
"I'm Rocky," he finally introduces himself. He has a hint of an accent, something lilting, melodic. I can't really place it.
"Rocky," I repeat, slowly. "Like the movies?"
"No," Rocky deadpans, giving me a look like I'm stupid. "Like the rocks."
