Klinger and Trapper were slowly shuffling out of the room with a patient between them, exhaustion weighing them down. Mulcahy was running supplies around the tables now, far less patients needing their last rites by this hour of endless meatball surgery. Every time the OR doors opened Hawkeye could get a glimpse of Radar slumped against the wall. He’d fallen asleep in a pile of folders and papers, his glasses askew.

Dutch hadn’t thought, had acted out of habit. When they’d stopped their horses, dismounted to let them drink and rest, he’d clapped Arthur on the shoulder (Hosea had hissed, drawing his breath) and pulled him in for a one-armed hug, booming “That was incredible, son!”
Dutch had frozen when he realized what he’d done, expecting Arthur to cower, or cringe, or even to bolt.

Summary
There are many things, it seems, that Arthur never told him. About his hopes. His fears. About how heavily the weight of the gang crushed down on his shoulders. About the bright moments he found out there in the wilds, helping and befriending random strangers just because he could. The strange phenomena he saw and dutifully noted in his journal, then never spoke of again. There is so much, John realises, that he never knew about his brother, because he never asked.
But really, out of all the mysteries in Arthur’s life, this one seems like a pretty big deal to not goddamn mention.
