Summary
And, maybe the clearest memory she has of that night, Zoey remembers Mira abandoning her in the crowd.
She had begged. Pleaded. Cajoled. She grabbed onto Mira’s arm and cried into her shoulder, begged her, because Mira and Rumi were the only family she had. How could Mira not consider Zoey to be her family in the same way Zoey considered her to be? Why was it so easy for Mira to give in once Rumi wasn’t with her? Did Zoey just not fucking matter the same way? What was so different about her?
Mira hadn’t listened to a single one of her pleas or urges. She just kept shuffling forward, following the crowd to Namsan Tower as if Zoey wasn’t there in the first place. Zoey numbly trailed after her for a while. She remembers how she had the bitter thought that she wasn’t even important enough for Gwi-ma to pay any mind to. He could get into Rumi and Mira’s heads just fine, he made an effort there, but not with her? And then his voice kicked up in the back of her mind, and Zoey let herself listen.
What else did she have to lose? What more was there for her to hold onto?

Summary
She was the one who brought Rumi to the club in the first place, Rumi’s her own person, and it shouldn’t bother her at all.
And the guy couldn’t even fucking dance. If Rumi wanted to dance with someone, why not Mira?
That’s the thought that leaves her winded and angrier than she had been. It’s like all the air is punched out of her lungs as soon as the words appear in her brain and echo throughout her skull. It’s the worst insult to injury she’s ever experienced in her life, and it only encourages her mind to run rampant with all the reasons as to why.
Why not her? Why wouldn’t Rumi go to her? Why would Rumi pick him and not her?
Mira knows how to dance. Mira swears to god she’s taught Rumi most of what she knows, and Rumi doesn’t...Rumi doesn’t even like dancing. She does it because she has to, not because it’s something she genuinely enjoys. So if Rumi suddenly decided she wanted to dance so bad, why wouldn’t she dance with Mira? Why would she pick some random guy in a crowd full of people she doesn’t know?

It only makes sense that Rumi and Mira are closer, they’ve literally been in each other’s life for longer than she’s been in either of theirs. And that’s fine! That’s completely okay. It makes sense. Obviously Rumi would be closer with Mira than she’d be with her, and obviously Mira would like Rumi more than her, and it’s...
Fine. It’s fine.
It’s...totally fine.
“C’mon, Zoey!” Rumi says with a laugh, eyes sparkling in the early morning sun. “You can sit up front if you want.”
Zoey still grins and laughs with them. She still stands there and watches them play around and she still thinks that she really, really likes them, but she can’t wholly shake off the feeling that it’s not good enough. That she’s not good enough. Because, well, if she was better or more like either of them, then wouldn’t they like her more?
Rumi and Mira have gotten back to their feet and seem less inclined to go through another round of whatever it was they were doing. They nudge each other the whole way to the car, and Zoey follows along after them, stepping in the bootprints they’ve left behind.
Yeah. No big deal at all.

Summary
Rumi rolls her eyes. She’s halfway through saying, “You don’t know that,” when she goes completely still, dead in her tracks. She ends up yanking Mira back largely by accident, and she can distantly hear Mira asking her something—probably demanding why she stopped in the first place—but Rumi’s mind is occupied with a dozen other thoughts. Mostly stuff like ‘oh my god, she’s gorgeous’.
Up ahead of them, maybe ten or so paces, is a park Rumi likes to go to in her free time. There’s a tennis court that she’s only seen be used by groups that were clearly fucking around, but now it’s occupied by someone who might be the most gorgeous woman alive.
“Oh,” Mira says from beside her. The only reason Rumi is drawn back to her body is because she hears the instant mocking lilt in Mira’s voice. When she finally manages to tear her gaze away from the woman and look toward Mira, it’s already too late. Mira’s grin has turned downright wolfish, her eyes sparkling when she teases, “So...do you want me to get her number for you, or...?”

Summary
She knows Zoey wouldn’t freak out at her for just bringing it up as a concept, and she knows Zoey still wouldn’t freak out at her if she offered it as more of a concrete, ‘is this what we are’ sort of deal. Mira just really does not want to fucking do that literally at all, so she’s been avoiding the conversation.
She’s pretty sure Rumi brought them here so she could have said conversation. Unfortunately for Rumi, Mira is the most stubborn person she’s ever met, including Rumi herself, and she’s not going to cave just because Rumi is trying to get her to. If Rumi wants it to happen so badly, she can have the stupid conversation herself. Mira absolutely won’t.
She plans on enjoying Hallim and Hyeopjae beach, and that’s it. She doesn’t plan on spending the rest of her vacation doing anything she doesn’t want to do. Rumi can hold her at gunpoint for all she cares. There’s just no way in hell Mira is going to deal with that right now.
...
Rumi is going to make Mira talk to Zoey even if it kills her.

“These are so pretty, Ru,” Zoey murmurs before she kisses a spot on Rumi’s chest.
“Wh-what?” Rumi asks in a breathless laugh. Does she have a scar, or something? She thinks she would know. She glances down to where Zoey is, and...
“Your patterns?” Mira asks, sounding sort of confused. She kisses the side of Rumi’s neck, her hands drifting down her arms, squeezing around her wrists. “They’re gorgeous, Rumi. You’re gorgeous. Why did you hide this from us for so long?” she murmurs gently.
Zoey hums against Rumi’s skin. “So pretty,” she agrees.
Rumi blinks rapidly, her mind whirling away from her. She can barely make either of them out, not in the moonlight. It’s so dark outside. It’s still warm, but it’s starting to get cold again. Again? She thought it was warm this morning, she thought it was warm when they drove over here.
“I don’t, I don’t have...patterns,” Rumi chokes out. “Why do you think I have—?”
Mira lets out a low, rumbly laugh. “Then what are these?” she asks.

He’s still alive. He’s still here. Death still won’t come for him.
Death won’t come for him, but life will, apparently.
Life that takes the form of Ryu Rumi.
Jinu doesn’t understand her or how she’s managed to do this to him. He used to hate her, and there’s a part of him that is convinced he still has to, because if he doesn’t, what more does he have? She’s a liar like him, selfish like him, but she won’t admit to any of it. She takes and takes and takes and expects the world to turn around her and allow her to do so, and it just...does. She won’t own her patterns or her mistakes. She might have been born with them, but it’s more than patterns that make a person a demon, Jinu knows that more assuredly than he knows anything else. He doesn’t think Rumi quite crosses the line of falling into being a demon, not like him, but she’s close.
He hates that she’s forced him to remember what it was like to be human better than anyone else or anything ever has.

“Rumi, you were...you were going to...” Zoey starts, her voice dying off halfway through her sentence. Rumi watches her throat bob before she chokes out, “You were going to kill yourself. I-I just, we—we’re just, um, we just...we’re...”
“It’s...it has to be harder for you,” Mira whispers. “So, um. We figured you didn’t want to...talk about it.”
Zoey nods. “W-which is fine! You, you don’t have to.”
Mira breathes out, “We didn’t want to make you feel like you, I don’t know, had to. Or whatever.”
“Exactly,” Zoey softly agrees. “I-I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to make you feel weird about it, I just, um, I just...we’ve, um, you know. It’s...”
Neither of them speak once Zoey trails off and doesn’t pick back up on her train of thought.
Rumi stands there in stunned silence for a few seconds.
“What?” she asks, screwing up her face. “I didn’t—what are you talking about? I didn’t try to—what?” Rumi tries again, trying and failing to get out the words. “I didn’t try to kill myself.”

Summary
...Mira knows too much about the ones who know about her, like her father. She knows that slipping up even once would be enough to get herself stuck forever, until she died, and there’d be nothing she could do about it. She’s already lived through having to narrowly escape that fate once, and she’s not looking for a repeat of that, even if it means she sticks to rules that are a little too over the top and intense. Mira also knows that failing would be beyond detrimental to her, a fate worse than death, and that keeping people out—all while making sure to keep an eye on the ones who get too close—is ultimately a kinder fate than what she could expect if she got it wrong.
It doesn’t matter if anyone is actually hunting her or not; Mira hasn’t stopped living her life like someone is as soon as she learnt what it meant to get caught, and she’d rather live like this than risk fucking up and getting caught in a trap.
Foxes are meant to be clever, anyway. Mira likes to pride herself on being particularly evasive and hard to catch.

Summary
Mira squeezes her eyes shut. Zoey pulls her thumb from her mouth to grasp Mira by the jaw again, tugging at her just enough that she snaps her eyes open again without having to be told. She’s learnt the game well enough, though it’s not like Zoey didn’t literally tell her word for word what she wanted her to do. She was very clear about how she wanted Mira to watch herself get edged to tears and then fucked through it, and that she wasn’t allowed to look away from herself for too long without punishment.
Zoey nips at Mira’s shoulders, still spreading her thighs apart when she whispers, “Look at yourself, Mira. You’re so pretty, did you know that? My pretty girl,” she murmurs. “All mine. You’re so beautiful when you’re all fucked out and needy.” Zoey drags her index finger through Mira’s folds, grinning into her skin when Mira lets out another broken moan, as if she’s dying. “Oh, you need it bad, don’t you, gorgeous?”
Mira chokes out a sob, dropping her head for all of a second before she looks back up, teary-eyed, lips parted. “Zoey, please,” she begs.

Rumi makes a noise. “Oh. Oh, what?”
“What?” Zoey asks, glancing up from her phone again. “What’s up, Ru?”
“There’s a perk that makes roaches love me,” Rumi says back. She sounds genuinely giddy at the prospect. “It’s either that or extra stamina. So...roach love, or extra stamina?”
Zoey opens her mouth to helpfully relay advice that she knows Rumi will like, but then she hears that fucking upgrade console noise go off, and before she can even ask or clarify or do anything at all, Rumi is saying, “Roach love.”
God. Zoey wants her so bad it makes her feel stupid.
(or, what better way to spend an indefinite hiatus than playing ten billion different video games with the loves of your life?)
