Shen Yuan gave a polite bow, keeping his voice carefully monotone as he responded. “Pray you pardon me for my absence, my Lord. I had been invested in my studies and lost track of time.”
In truth, he had found a really interesting book in Shen Lan’s collection and hadn’t known that Jun Wu was returning to begin with.
He gave no reaction to the mutters of the crowd. Apparently, they hadn’t liked that excuse very much and expected him to get scolded.
“Again?” he heard one person whisper.
“Isn’t he late every time the Emperor holds these meetings? You’d think someone as important as him would manage his time better…”
“Maybe he’ll finally be reprimanded this time? He’s just insulting the Emperor by being late all the time,” muttered another.

He bowed once more towards a surprised Xie Lian before walking away from the group and disappearing behind a corner.
Once he was sure the two were alone, Shen Lan made his way to the exit of the courtyard.
During the short walk, the child was looking up at him with pure confusion, and Shen Lan sighed before explaining the bare minimum.
“You were interfering with my recordings. I can’t have you stay here, so I’m taking you out of the palace courtyard and back to where you came. I’ll leave you some money. I don’t like seeing children starve." He would not apologize to the kid. It was already more than enough that he was telling him this.
And so, he did as he said he would and set the boy outside, back on the streets, with a pouch and some money.
“I hope we don’t meet again in the future. Do try and get your injuries looked at, will you?”

“Out with it, Airplane,” Shen Yuan demanded with a sigh, snatching up Zhishi and smacking him over the head with it. He was only caught slightly off guard when he realized Zhishi felt different in his hands than it had in the memories.
Airplane squeaked. “Okay, okay! Look, you kept, like, changing forms in your sleep? At one point, you looked like a servant, then you looked like a nurse, and then you looked like a doctor? You were also a beggar kid for, like, a while. It was weird to see you like that, by the way. I barely even recognized you! Thought that your kid had found his way back here and changed his clothes back somehow.”
Shen Yuan frowned. So if he shapeshifted in his dreams or memories, he subconsciously did so in the real world as well? He hoped he never dreamt when he’d been staying with Xie Lian. How awkward would that have been? (He purposefully ignored how his heart ached at the thought of him in a way that hadn’t before. He would deal with that later, thank you very much!)

Maybe this wasn't that big of an issue? Perhaps things would just continue the way they always have. It could be one of those situations where it's only an issue if he makes it an issue. Very well. Time to not make it an issue!
After taking a moment to recollect himself, he gave a smile to Xie Lian. “Sorry. I was just admiring how much Hua Cheng looked like Lang Ying.”
Xie Lian blinked, smiling back as he looked at Hua Cheng.
“He does look a lot like Lang Ying! I’m surprised at how well your disguise looks, San Lang. Though, you need to get better at acting in the future.” He laughed. Then, he asked, “San Lang, are you going to keep changing? Are you going to turn into a child of five or six? Or even better, a little baby?”
Hearing the hope in his voice, Hua Cheng could only reply helplessly, “I’m afraid I will have to disappoint Gege.”

Hua Cheng, who’d been watching, huffed and released a couple butterflies. They flew close to Shen Yuan and emitted a nice, steady warmth as they glowed. Really, what couldn’t Hua Cheng do?
Shen Yuan let out a small, happy breath of relief, cupping a couple butterflies in his hands with the Emberrot Sprouts, and the rest flew onto his shoulders and head. They weren’t as effective as a nice fire would be, but they were still nice!

Shen Yuan couldn’t help but sigh in relief. Good, he’d thought something happened to him. Not because it was gay, but just because it was normal to be concerned! He would’ve been concerned for anybody in his position!
Pei Ming raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms with an amused expression. “What, did you not believe I could handle myself?”
“Only because of me!” Rong Guang spoke up from where the sword hung on Pei Ming’s waist. “You’d be sleeping with the fishes if it weren’t for me!”
Pei Ming sighed, and Shen Yuan fanned himself. “I’m glad to see you’re alright.”
