Summary
Shane's entire life there has been some missing piece. When they were in his parents living room yesterday it was like a phantom limb had been brought home. The Hollander’s coach was always meant to seat another person, and that person was destined to be Ilya. At least that’s how it felt to Shane.
Now his parents are coming over for a proper dinner to get to know his boyfriend and there is something still nagging at the back of his mind.
“What did you and my dad talk about yesterday?” Shane asks, his thumb rubbing small circles against Ilya’s sunkissed thigh. “When I was outside with mom.”
Or, a missing Cottage Days dinner with the Hollanders after Shane comes out.

“You’ll text when you land, right?” Shane asks as he takes an exit ramp labeled Airport Departures.
“Yes. Promise.”
“And you’ll call tonight?” Shane’s throat works over the words, like he still doesn’t trust this new thing between them. Ilya thinks he understands. He also doesn’t know how to trust this love. How can he when it has been trapped in his own heart so long. Neither of them know what the next year will bring. There is so much time before Ilya can have his agent, or his future agent, he will need a new one with no connections to Russia, reach out to Ottawa and hope that they’ll be interested in a future Hall of Fame center. The one thing Ilya is certain of is that he will do everything in his power to make their plan work. He spent his entire adult life lusting after, and then pining for Shane with his whole heart.
“I will call.” Ilya reaches for the hand Shane has left on the gearshift and threads his fingers through his. He wants to say so much, but he has always been better with touch than words, especially when the only shared language was English. “We will talk every day.”
Or, There is a year before Ilya can sign with Ottawa, Shane counts down the days until their forever.

Summary
“I think we need some rules for this year,” Shane admits. He knows it’s not fun or cool. It’s also the only way he’s going to be able to drive away from this ugly ass apartment and not have a panic attack.
“Like your rules for loading the dishwasher?” Ilya teases, his thumb rubbing a gentle circle on the apple of Shane’s cheek. “No, No you would want something more serious.”
Once Ilya told him he preferred to have hard conversations in person so that he could reach out and touch Shane. He said it was grounding and made him feel safe. Shane gets it. All of this is less scary when their knees are bumped together and Ilya’s hands are gently holding his head.
“More like some guardrails to make sure your first year in Ottawa is a success.” It’s a cop out. He wants rules to be sure that come next summer they are just like this with a few more memories thrown in for good measure.
Or: After a year of living in different countries Ilya has successfully been signed with the Ottawa Centaurs. Now both he and Shane have to learn to navigate what it's means when long distance doesn't involve plane rides and stolen nights while Ilya establishes roots in Shane's boring hometown.

Ilya never texted Shane back. He didn’t call. Twenty minutes turned into two hours, then eight.
Shane had spent that time spiraling. It’s something he hasn’t done recently, at least, not about this. No, up until yesterday he thought his relationship was unflappable, that Ilya was just as happy as he was. Well, as happy as they both could be keeping such a major part of their lives a secret.Every time he closed his eyes he saw the hurt that flashed across Ilya’s face right before he kicked him out.
I already chose you, Hollander.
The words had landed in his gut like a rock. They never discussed the things he’d given up, not because Shane wasn’t, at least peripherally, aware that that was the case. He moved to a new country and signed with a team that was so historically bad they were a laughing stock. One of the greatest players in the league tore up his American visa, sold his car collection, and moved to Ottawa just to be within driving distance of him. Ilya did that to give their relationship a real chance.
Or, Ilya kicked Shane out on Boxing day and now he has to wait two weeks to make things right. Those two weeks are going to change everything.

Summary
Shane wasn’t a big dog person. Maybe that wasn’t fair. He wasn’t a very big animal person. He never had pets growing up. He was on a travel hockey team when he was still in elementary school. He never had the urge to ask his parents for a furry friend, and he is sure they would have been horrified at the idea of having to care for a pet while also carting him all over the Province every weekend.
So this afternoon has come as a bit of a shock. Shane knew Ilya wanted a dog. He sent him enough pictures of Chiron, the Centaurs team dog, for Shane to get the hint. He just didn’t know he was going to get one in the middle of the season.

“You’ve been coming here for years. You always bring me back a yogurt parfait and a latte. I guess when I woke up this morning I realized that you don’t have to do that anymore.” Little crumbs of muffin litter Shane’s chin. Ilya wants to reach out and dust them away but he can’t bring himself to drop Shane’s hand. Not in this perfect moment.
“I will always bring you home coffee,” Ilya says. He wants to spend the rest of his life showing up for Shane in every way he needs.
Shane squeezes his hand and gives a slight shake of his head before taking a long drink of his coffee.

They’ve gone years surviving on stolen moments, so now everything feels vibrant, wonderful, secure. It’s everything Ilya ever dreamed of and thought he could never have. Loving Shane openly, being loved loudly and publicly in return, is everything his heart ever wanted.
So Ilya doesn’t get jealous. He doesn’t need to.
Except that today Shane is out to lunch with Rose. He drove out to Montreal this morning, a place that now makes Ilya want to see red, so they could go shopping and catch up before going to one of the chic restaurants that Ilya never got to frequent with Shane when he lived there.
Or, Shane spends a day with Rose and Ilya is forced to recognize he isn't as unflappable as he thought.
