Author’s Note: About My Hockey Stories

I love hockey. I also have… thoughts about hockey culture 😅

These stories aren’t meant to be realistic depictions of the NHL as it currently exists. If anything, they’re the version I wish existed.

Because in the real world, elite athletes are often given a lot, very early, and not always the support or structure to handle it well. The culture around them can reward aggression, ego, and silence more than reflection or accountability.

That’s not every player, obviously—but it’s enough that it shapes the environment.

So my fictional players aren’t built from that system.

Notes:

They’re what hockey might look like if the culture were different.
- players who are still competitive, driven, and very good at what they do
- but also thoughtful, emotionally aware, and capable of real relationships
- people who have lives beyond the rink and don’t fall apart without it

The Horizons (and the broader world around them) are designed that way on purpose:
- education matters
- integrity matters
- how you treat people matters

They’re still flawed and human —but they’re not operating in a system that normalises the worst parts of the sport.

So no, these stories aren’t realistic.

They’re more like what hockey could be, if we kept everything great about it and fixed some of the rest

There’s still hockey, still competition, still pressure—but also:
- partnership
- friendship
- domestic life
- and relationships that actually (hopefully) hold up off the ice

Oh and lots of sex.

I know this won’t match everyone’s view of the sport or the genre, and that’s fine. I wrote these because I wanted to read them.
