“Yeah,” she said, a smile pulling at the corner of her mouth.
“You promise?”
Cynthia didn’t promise. She wasn’t a liar, and she’d never lie to Ariana. But also, she didn't think anything was wrong. Just... off. She smiled wider, nodded once, and bumped her shoulder lightly into Ariana’s like punctuation.
And Ariana — bright as a summer's day, just like that — grinned right back.
