“Will…” Mike stared at the book he’d picked up moments ago, a dark scrawl on the page. Will had been experimenting with mediums lately, and it was clear he’d taken a liking to charcoal. It swirled effortlessly, magically, the monotone paper being a sea of his creation. “Why are our DnD characters kissing?” He breathed, voice quiet as he stared unabashedly.
It was impossible to register his emotion; Mike’s face was as blank as a summer sky. Try as he might, Will couldn’t push a single word past his lips.
“Will?” It’s practically a whisper now.

Summary
Mike's hair was plastered to his neck, eyes focused and trained on the ball, fingers twitching like they were incomplete without it.
Somebody shouts, and Mike visibly relaxes, his posture straightening as he drags a lazy hand through his hair. Will's eyes attach to the motion, startling when Mike looks back.
He beams, waving brightly, pushing up onto the tips of his toes as if Will couldn't see him already. His quiet laugh and small wave in return brings his party's attention to him.
Lucas and Dustin exchange a look.

Summary
Page by page, Will sees his childhood unfold on paper from the perspective of the boy he once loved. Cold, frost bitten fingers clenching tight onto swing set handles. The knot in Mike's heart that never quite left after he saw Will's body, sopping wet and lifeless by the quarry. A boy, haloed in light as he hands over a painting, a silent confession. More, more, more. Every second of everything Will has tried to forget since he left so long ago.
Eyes bleary, Will finally reaches the last few pages. His heart aches as the desolate, grey radio tower is described.

They were turned to one another now, close. (But not too close. Too close was difficult not to reach out and slip into one whole.) Mike offered a smile, crisp in the dark that covered them like pitch snowfall. The other couldn't help but return the expression, lips curling around his teeth like a secret. He felt brave tonight. Courage radiated off of his bones, translated into shaky fingers and rapid heartbeats. Maybe it was finally time.

Mike was terrified of heights, and yet here he was. Sitting along the edge of Hawkin's steepest drop into water, dangling his legs over the edge. He's jumped here once before, felt his stomach plummet as the crashing water below him grew closer. Thoughts ripped through his little twelve year old brain as he rushed towards the bottom, wondering if Dustin would be okay now, if Lucas would still be mad at him for bringing the new girl along, if maybe now he'd get to see Will again.
He thought he'd died then, when he stopped falling.
When Jane lifted him rightfully back onto the ground, knees buckling beneath him as he landed safely, something snapped inside of him. Something soft shattered between his lungs then, even as he hugged Dustin and Jane, even as he dragged himself to bed that night. Even now. Even now, it won't stop cracking. Splintering further with each day he continues on. It's tiring.
Mike is tired.

It always made William uncertain, when his devoted looked upon him with that expression. It was one of the only times he couldn't know exactly what was going on between the folds of his brain. How his eyebrows would pinch up in that specific way he'd get when he was confused, and the curves of his dimples would shine through the patches of flushed skin along his cheeks. Will used to think he had everything figured out about Michael Wheeler, but time and time again he'd be proven wrong.
He didn't mind this sort of mystery, though. There was something nice, in being able to discover something new about one another every day. To adjust and to love, to find where you fit amongst the solids and fluids of a relationship.
It was easy, with Michael.
