Summary
Evan sat hunched in the hard uncomfortable chair, fingers pinching at the already sore skin around his nails.
Two days before summer break and he was called into the principal’s office.
He knew why, of course he did he wasn't completely stupid, he’d seen the sleek black car parked outside. There were no obvious markings but everyone knew that some special unit of the FBI were in Hershey.
And everyone knew why.
So yeah, yeah he knew why he’d been called to the office.
It was because of what had happened to Samara.

“Wait-“ There it was, even years later that voice was the same. Buck would recognise it anywhere, even if the last time he’d heard it they’d both been flinging insults at one another. “Wait I want to thank you-“ The voice faltered. Buck didn’t have much time to wonder why though because she was speaking again, “Buckley. Your turnouts say B- oh my god.”
He closed his eyes, pressing his lips together tightly, and he could feel Hen and Chim’s confused gazes on his back.
Then he pulled his helmet off, tucking it under his arm as he turned around. “Yes Taylor. It’s me.”
“Uh- do you two know each other?” Chim’s eyes flicked between them both- and Hen was watching with narrowed eyes.
“Knew. A long time ago. Right Taylor?”
“Evan.”
“You can lose the kicked puppy look. You’re not entitled to it.”

Buck has a past none of his team know about, unfortunately for him being a Firefighters means facing blasts from the past like Taylor Kelly.

“I-“ Rina ducked her head again, tightening her arms around her knees. “You’re nice.”
“I know right? I keep telling my friends but they won’t listen.” That earned him a giggle before he added, “You seem pretty nice too Rina.” He hummed. “So, feel free to tell me off for this, but I feel the need to ask, why are you sat out here instead of in there painting? What happened?”
That had Rina tensing up a little, brows furrowing and lips pinching downwards.
“You don’t have to tell me.” Buck held up his hands, “But maybe if you do I can help Rina. You seem like a great kid and sitting out here? You can understand why you have us all a little worried sweetheart.”
“They didn’t notice.” The words were barely audible she said them so softly.
“Who didn’t notice what?” Four words, it was shocking how easy it was to put Buck on edge, but 'they didn't notice' made his blood chill in his veins. They didn't notice. Something bad enough to have this girl on the damn roof and someone who should have noticed hadn't. There was only so much that could mean.

Summary
Rina had no real friends, and Buck wanted better for her, and he knew that as ridiculous as it might feel, her figuring out her own style would help with that. She’d spent years wearing what her parents wanted her to, trying to earn the love they’d never really give her.
Now she had a chance to be herself, fully and unapologetically and Buck knew she hadn’t fully figured out what that meant yet.
So Buck had decided that he needed to find someone who could empathize with Rina and help her. Which meant a woman. Hen, Karen, Athena and Maddie were all too old to be the sort of guide that he knew she needed.
May Grant however, sixteen going on seventeen, bright and confident as she was? Buck had decided she would be an excellent guide in all things teenage girl. So he’d talked to Athena first, the woman giving him a fond look in response and telling him that he was a good parents and that if May said yes then of course he could take the girls to the mall as long as he was paying.

Now he had Rina, and he was going to spend Christmas with her.
It was a strange thought. The last couple of Christmases hadn’t been the best, Buck had been mostly on his own, though he’d at least gotten messages and presents from the team the year before and a call from Spencer that had lasted over an hour, and Chim had taken a photo of him in front of the truck to send to Maddie.
It hadn’t felt like Christmas but he hadn’t let that ruin it.
And now not only was he surrounded by family but he had a kid. He was responsible for a whole human being. And as far as he was concerned that responsibility included making sure she had the best Christmas she possibly could.

But what Athena didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her. And it was hardly as if Buck was inexperienced with this sort of thing, though to be fair to Athena she didn’t know that.
She wouldn’t approve of what he knew he had to do. Not that any of what he was doing would really be illegal. Not exactly anyway.
Even if they could arrest Doug, even if they could get charges for domestic abuse to stick, it wouldn’t fix things. It would be a temporary reprieve and nothing more. Generally domestic abuse convictions were only a few years. And there was no way Doug would obey a restraining order.
And even if Buck could set it up so that Doug tried to kill him… any chance that the man would get released would be too high. It didn’t matter if it was four years or twenty or fifty. If he was still alive and Maddie was still alive when he got out?
He would come after her.
That left one option.
Killing him.

“No, not at all.” The mans smile was wide, and yet it didn’t reach his eyes. And Buck could see how… tense he was. Despite the smile he was clearly nervous about something. “Nothing bad at all Mr Buckley. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m here about an inheritance.”

Summary
Returning home after the trip to Hershey was a good feeling. Saying goodbye to Spencer had been… hard. But then it always was, and Buck knew it would always be a little difficult. But he and Spencer always made it work. It didn’t matter how far apart they were, Spencer was always a phone call away. Just one simple call away.
If Buck needed him then if there was one thing he knew it was that Spencer would come running, he always had before after all. The distance was annoying but it didn’t stop them from being as close as they always had been.

Summary
Bobby had tried to talk to him a dozen times already. Buck however had denied every single call.
Hell Athena had called him the other day to beg him to talk to Bobby before the man drive himself into an early grave through stress.
Buck had cheerfully told her that he was doing fine, and that Bobby needed to relax. There was nothing to talk about, Buck had made up his mind and he was staying on strike.
So Buck wasn’t entirely surprised when, early on a Saturday morning, he opened his door to find Bobby stood there, arms crossed, a disapproving look on his face.

Summary
All in all, Buck was feeling great about his return to the 118.
He had earned his life back.
Spencer had been right, the decision to take his leg had been the right one in the end he knew, he had no regrets. And the team had welcomed him back, Bobby especially despite the fact that during the first few shifts the man had looked more than a little tense, his eyes constantly straying back to Buck as if he was terrified something would go wrong and he’d get hurt again.

Abuela pulled back, eyes narrowing slightly, brows furrowing as her eyes flicked between him and Eddie. “Edmundo, have you talked to your parents?” which had Eddie wincing.
“No, no not yet.” Eddie admitted, “It- I know I should have but-“
“But my foolish son and his wife are estupido?”
“Si Abuela.” Eddie nodded, “That about sums it up.”
“It won’t be a good idea to tell them at the party mijo.” That came from Tia Pepa, an understanding but concerned look on her face. “You need to try and speak to them before the party. Neither of you should have to deal with that.“
“We won’t.” Buck piped up, “Don’t worry. I already told Eddie I know he’s not ready to talk to them about his sexuality yet and he’s not ready to come out so we’ll just pretend that we’re friends and Eddie moved in with me for practical reasons. We’ll talk to Rina and Chris- maybe convince Chris that it’s a game or something.”

“Chim. What exactly happened this morning?”
“They must have used a new number to try and call Maddie because they got through.”
“… Okay. Okay so my parents called. That’s… not great but-“
“They called to tell us that they’re in LA.”
“They-“ Buck blinked once. Twice.
He swallowed hard.
“They’re in LA?”
