She reaches into the fold of her sleeve and presses her fingers to the small vial hidden there—her own blend, dried mugwort and yarrow, something Luomen had once sworn warded off grief. “Placebo,” she’d told him. “Powerful things,” he’d replied, with that wheezing smile.
She closes her hand around it.
Then she walks, one foot in front of the other, away from the only place in the world that had ever smelled like safety.
She does not look back.
There is no point.
The wood is rotting. The roof leaks. And the apothecary—without Luomen—wreaks of mold.
