Summary
The sun is meeting the horizon now, the world slowly falling into night. The already dark sky grows darker, and there are only shadows created by sparse lights in lawns and on porches.
He tucks his face in his backpack, hiding from a new set of bright headlights. He waits for them to pass by too, like all the others. He listens to the car get closer and closer until it’s right in front of his house.
Out of the corners of his vision, he sees the lights land on him.
A car door opens, and Tommy looks up.
“Tommy!”
“Wilbur?”
Or: Tommy is locked out of his house after his mother forgot about him. Wilbur finds out and takes him home, reminding Tommy that he's worth remembering.

Tommy took a step back.
Then several.
Flashes of hostile memories blinded him, all too similar circumstances as this ending in the same way. Memories of tears and screams and that horrible smell.
Unlatching from Techno, Wilbur inhaled and exclaimed a little too loudly, “Tommy! My sweet baby, come here, sunshine,” Wilbur staggered forwards, reaching out to Tommy, “I love you so much, Toms, my-“
Wilbur hesitated when Tommy jumped back like he’d been burned.
Wilbur’s face fell into shock at the realization of what Tommy was thinking. What Wilbur had forgotten.
Or: Wilbur comes home drunk and forgets Tommy’s boundaries and triggers. Tommy has only ever seen the abusive side of intoxication and reacts accordingly. Tommy isolates himself, blaming himself for his reaction as Wilbur tries to get through to him.

The thought came easily. Wilbur.

The thought comforted Tommy.

Tommy uncomfortably coughs as his throat tries to choke itself. “They’re not, um, here right now.”
It’s not that Tommy lies about how absent his parents are, he just doesn’t say the full truth. He doesn’t want to tell Wilbur that it’s been 3 weeks now, because deep down he knows that this is not okay.
Wilbur tonelessly asks, “Where are they, now?”
Tommy squeezes his eyes shut as his voice breaks. “Greece.”
Wilbur tries to smother his anger in sweet names. “What did you do for your birthday, love?”
Tommy’s been ignoring that question all day. He’s been dancing around that word, avoiding it like he could forget his reality.
But his reality is bitch-slapping him in the face, and Wilbur is the only thing that doesn’t hurt.

Tommy furrows his brow. “What do you mean, ‘pretend’?”
Wilbur pauses for a moment, studying the face in his hands.
“Oh,” Wilbur breathes, watching Tommy’s face morph from confusion to suspicion. “You- you don’t remember?”
Tommy’s voice breaks. “Remember what?”

Tommy is sedated after a doctor’s appointment, too lost in the sauce to understand just how clingy he gets. Wilbur takes this opportunity to show his little brother how very loved he is- whether or not Tommy wants it when the anesthesia wears off.

Summary
Wilbur: Is that the only reason you don’t want to see me? Because you don’t want to talk?
Tommy remembers his parents asking the doctor why their son doesn’t want to talk. The doctor had clarified that Tommy can’t talk, he likely wants to, but can’t.
It must be some psychosomatic response that everytime Tommy opens his mouth, his throat closes up and the words swell in his head, becoming discombobulated and incoherent. It must be unconscious, or just an old habit, for his body to reject speaking when it feels like it.
Me: its not you, i love you i promise
Wilbur: I love you too
A small knot unravels in Tommy’s chest, and he breathes.
Wilbur: I’m coming over
Or: Tommy hates going mute and denies socializing because of his insecurity behind this behavior. Wilbur comes along and gives Tommy a different perspective, that of a loving brother.

There’s an absent smile on Wilbur’s face, something behind his eyes. “Vampires of the same coven drink each other's blood. It’s not nutritional, it’s more like a kind of trust exercise.”
Tommy scrunches up his nose. “Ew.”
Wilbur chuckles. “Like I said, it probably sounds pretty bad to a human. But, if you trust someone, it’s a reminder of why you do, how much you do. Family, and all that.”
Tommy shakes his head. “I could never be a vampire.”
“Really?” Wilbur incredulously asks. The shocked look Tommy gives him in response brings out a chuckle. “No, no, I understand that, but you… That deters you? I mean, you trust me, don’t you?”
Tommy freezes. Something has changed, but Tommy doesn’t know what. Wilbur is serious, and… Tommy doesn’t know if he’s allowed to say no.
Something in Wilbur’s voice tells him to agree.

Summary
Another louder crash, and Tommy hardly sees one of the aisles collapse in on itself before he’s buried his face in Wilbur’s chest.
His heart is thumping like he’s running a marathon, and all but his legs are wrapped around Wilbur. Shaking and uncontrollably chirping, Tommy still doesn’t think he’s felt safer in his life than in Wilbur’s arms.
And Wilbur is hugging Tommy back, rubbing above his wings and whispering, “It’s fine, no one was hurt. It only fell, dear. I’ve got you.”
Tommy can’t totally understand the words, not when his mind is a jumble of fear and adrenaline. He’s all instincts now, but he knows that Wilbur is protecting him and Wilbur will keep him safe. Tommy can’t even fight his birdbrain when the name of his foster brother is replaced by the title, dad.
