Summary
Each year during the spring, Sonam was alone when it came to celebrating parents. The temple grounds were filled with parents and happy children. (Spending time with Sister Chōrei was fun, but she wasn’t her amma or apa. She was more like a sister if she had to compare.)
Sister Chōrei gave her the scrolls her parents left behind, and Sonam brought them with her because it was one of the few things she had of them left. Apa’s beautifully made Nagāo bow and amma’s katana hung over a small altar Sister Chōrei helped her set up. They were too big for her to bring.
Parent’s day was often a lonely experience.
“Sonam!” Ashina rushed over and swept her up in a hug and spun her around. “Where are your parents?”

Chōrei was fifteen, just shy of sixteen, her tattoos still stung a little, and she held her chin up as she faced all the Elders.
“No,” she shook her head. “I’m taking care of her.”
She remembered how the world stood still as the funeral pyres of Sister Pema and Monk Gyatso bolstered high up in the air. It was a rare occurrence to have one or more representatives of every mountain temple present at funerals.
Even the dragons looked sad.
She looked down at little Sonam blinking sleep away in her arms. Do you know? Your parents died and you won’t know them outside of the words of others and the things they left behind.

Zopa wasn’t blind. Far from it, even though most of the other nuns at the temple were.
There was a cloud of sadness around Jungney. On some days, it appeared lighter and other times heavy.
