Summary
He could leave. No one would blame him; this gang, once so tightly knit, is a nervous horse just moments away from bolting and taking the carriage with it. Charles doesn’t know why he can’t just make himself go.

Summary
Slowly, Javier lowered his head. He did not know what he was thinking, but in that moment, his thoughts nor John's mattered too much anymore. For they were too clouded by intense emotions to mean anything. He pressed his lips to John's, their mouths moving in sync with one another. A metallic, bitter taste pierced his tongue; blood left over from John's stitches, but he did not care. No longer did they need to speak; everything they wanted to say was communicated through their kiss."
...
"We shouldn't…" John whispered, barely audible. "This is wrong, Javier." Yet he held on to him, and Javier's heart broke once more.
*OR*
(A rewrite of the mission "Enter, Pursued by a Memory", where they end up getting lost in a blizzard and Javier is really worried about John)

Summary
Arthur knows he's dying, can feel the unstoppable pull of it, feels the spirit appear behind him to take him along. And yet, he finds he does not want to die. There is so much that went wrong, so much he regrets and he wishes, with all his being, he could change it. Could at least ensure those that managed to get away really make it out alive.
A second chance, he asks, begs, really. Just give me the chance to save them.
The being behind him pauses and Arthur can't look away from the moment he's frozen in, staring at the dark mountainside, aching to see the sun rise just one more time.
One chance, the spirit seems to whisper, voice satin soft. Make the most of it.

Summary
He’d tried, in the end, he really had. And it had been hard; so damn hard. Would’ve been so much easier to crawl off into the woods like a dying dog and let himself be reclaimed by the wilderness. But, getting them folks out, sending them to safety, doing his best to protect them from the Pinkertons and Dutch’s lunacy and that rat...
For maybe the first time in his life, there was no doubt in his mind about what was right or wrong, good or evil. He just knew.
The sunlight warms his face, and he smiles.
But then he hears footsteps.
-
Meanwhile, Charles Smith can’t stop looking back at the mountains to the south, and wondering what it means to be home.
