Summary
The humans threw Grace away. Grace, who worked so hard to save them, who came back for Rocky when he realized the taomoeba would eat through Rocky's ship. Grace, who gave up his chance to go home to save Erid too.
And then Rocky finds out exactly how Grace ended up in space.
They're not giving him back now. Grace will always have a place on Erid where he's beloved and cherished the way he should be, even if it takes Grace a while to believe he's worth that. Rocky may or may not have plans to fix up the Hail Mary for the trip back anyways- there were a few things they wanted to say directly to Stratt's face.

side note:
earth hardly knew him. im gonna be sick. honestly touches on one of my gripes about The Conversation where he's promised to be remembered as a hero and no one will know. "How can Earth be sorry if Earth doesn't know?" he doesnt need nor want to be remembered as a hero. gratitude is bare minimum, contrition is required. right or wrong, good and bad, it was still a violation.
eva chose to do the right thing. what bothers me is when people comment online "its easy math!" it shouldnt be! it shouldnt ever be! it should NEVER be easy and people's lives should never ever be boiled down to math, most of all an easy one. still was the right choice! but! i hate the holier than thou tone people take about it. we as people need to keep doing and being better. we must ensure and ascertain all actions to avoid past mistakes. will another trolley problem happen in the future? possibly. that doesnt mean we should shrug it off, dust off our hands and say, we did right in the end. every time we face a real trolley problem we have already failed in some way.
i deeply understand ryland's aversion to people knowing. his dignity as a person was violated and he was whittled down to his utility. his last memory of earth was a betrayal, to him and from him. but i still believe its important for earth to know, so that EXTRA caution is taken for it to never happen again.
we dont want to live in a world where the common person is nonconsensually murdered for the greater good, and we NEVER know about it. its a slippery slope. its demeaning. we did not love or appreciate laika or felicette any less for their victimhood. their sainthood.
whatever eva may have said in dialogue in the movie or book (her last convo with grace really hurt and cut on both sides 😭), i respect eva cause I hc that yes it was a fast and easy decision, but it was also, very very hard. thats why it sucks to me when people online shrug and go like yeah its easy math. she did the right but HARD thing. treating it nonchalantly demeans that. and if she were real she'd roll her eyes at everyone eagerly validating her. she wouldnt have needed nor wanted that. she knows she made the right decision and she would do it again if she had to, but im so sure in the aftermath, she would be extra anal about making sure it never comes close to happening again.
and if she really did mean to "hide" grace's cowardice and not just said it to comfort him (in her fucked up way??), i understand why it would be needed pre-taumeoba. but it should not be hidden after that. humanity deserves and needs to squirm with the decisions they made to save themselves. guilt or shame, whatever. without knowing the truth, there is no reparations or catalyst for improvement. realistically and annoyingly theyd blame eva tho smh
but thats just me
