Blitz understood that the stranger had no reason to trust him. But they wouldn’t make it very far this way. He needed to cut the tension somehow. He waved for the stranger’s attention, then asked, “What was that gesture you made, in the warehouse?” He tried to mimic what he remembered, pointing forward, then holding up a V against his forehead. “What does it mean?”
The stranger’s eyes widened in recognition, and the corner of his lips ticked. It didn’t look like a smile, not really, but something close. Amusement?
This time, when Blitz passed him the catalog and pen, he accepted both. Blitz watched him jot down a quick message, then pass the catalog back.
Blitz looked down. The stranger's handwriting was a bit shaky, but graceful, and ridiculously neat for someone who’d been vomiting in an alley just hours ago. It took him a moment to actually read the little words the stranger had written:
It means, “Are you stupid?”
When two luckless outsiders meet by chance, everything changes. Now, they’ll have to rediscover what it means to care about someone, as they learn how far they're willing to go to take fate into their own hands.
