In which Rocky dies before Grace.

The first day Rocky was allowed to see Grace again was the brightest Erid had ever shone. Grace could never forget the new rock-tight xenonite suit Rocky sported as he barreled through the door and embraced him. Actually embraced him. It was warm and waterproof, which was important. Grace sobbed.
It burned, the relief of being alive! It crisped in their chests and chipped away at something space froze inside of Grace and Rocky all those years ago; a painful, but necessary, thawing. It was something agonizingly beautiful, to outsmart death— to become “The Saviors of the Universe.” They rode that high like they would never come down, drunk on each other’s resilience. It was overwhelming and emotional, powerful and arousing. They were together, and they were safe.
Hearts swelled as Grace showed Rocky around his new home, finding themselves talking in new spaces, testing out the furniture, and ignoring as the artificial sun licked the xenonite horizon, leaving them blanketed in the comforting coolness of night’s shadows. Their laughs warmed the dome as waves crashed in dampened song outside, and they imagined several more nights like this one.
If he closes his eyes he can still see it. Simulated sunrises over the water, Rocky by his side kicking through the pebbles, singing. Laying on the bed, translating all the best novels for each other when they should be sleeping. Thrums and parades held in their honor where they danced in jovial circles, laughing and crying with love, holding each other.
He doesn’t like closing his eyes very long anymore.
