Chapter Text
Enid’s eyes opened wearily. The trees above her head were towering like the mountains in Canada. The leaves swayed in the early spring breeze. Her palms brushed against the grass beneath her. It was all so rich and lush green like emeralds. It was unlike anything Enid had seen at home. Her fingertips scratched against the grass subconsciously as she looked at the sliver of sunlight shining through the trees. Its warm rays felt good on her abdomen but when the sun got too bright she shifted her gaze to the field. Her fingers were still fidgeting with the tiny, grass blades. Her skin was paler than normal and her nail polish had chipped away, but it wasn’t paw.
Enid shot up with a start. She was human. How long has she been this way? A minute, ten minutes…an hour? Suddenly Enid heard some rustling far in the distance. Quickly Enid looked around for something to cover herself. There wasn’t much but within reach of her there was a dusty picnic blanket and jacket. They were probably left behind by a hiker, though by the looks of it they left in a hurry. Without another though Enid grabbed the two items. She heard the rustling getting louder as turned the blanket into a make-shift skirt, tying the ends together at her side. The blonde barely finished buttoning the jacket when a voice came from afar.
“Fester, she’s over here.”
Enid didn’t know if she should run or stay put. For all she knew these could be hunters, maybe those scared hikers had alerted them. Then again, there was something about the girl’s voice that felt familiar…comforting.
“Enid!”
Then she heard her name. Not the wolf, not the beast, not the monster… Enid. She looked up at the girl and her breath caught in her throat. It was Wednesday, she found her! But that wasn’t the part that shocked her, it was her outfit.
Wednesday was wearing a long, leather trench coat that tied around her waist giving it a fitted shape. On her feet were heavy black boots, and she had on some loose, pin-striped pants that bunched at the ankle. She looked like a C.I.A. agent, which for Wednesday Addams was probably the “dream job”. The entire outfit made her look so powerful like she had complete control of every situation before she even encountered it. It also made her look incredibly beautiful but not in the normal, surface level way. Her beauty was striking in a way only Wednesday Addams could possess, like a porcelain doll mixed with an executioner and some deadly nightshade.
“Enid!” Wednesday’s sharp voice cut through Enid’s thoughts, and she got the feeling Wednesday had been calling her for a while. Enid blushed the color of a rose. The seer knelt down in front of her.
“Enid, are you hurt?”
The blonde girl shook her head vigorously.
“Can you speak?” Wednesday asked with both concern and curiosity.
“No… I mean yes I can talk but no I’m not hurt.” Enid giggled shyly, her face growing hotter. Wednesday opened her mouth as if she was going to say something else, but she interrupted by the loud revving coming up the walk.
There was a man behind the wheel, bald and in a similar leather jacket to Wednesday, but his was more of a want to be rock star style then a spy. He stopped the vehicle just shy of the two girls still sitting on the grassy ground. Enid tensed wondering if this was another hunter or someone adjacent. Wednesday didn’t seem to have those reservations as she stood up calmly to face the man.
“How is it that I managed to out run you when you have the motorbike?” She teased and the familiarity in her tone told Enid this man was someone she could trust. The man chuckled slightly before leaning over the side to glance at Enid.
“This your friend?”
Wednesday nodded.
“Her name is Enid.” The shorter girl introduced before looking back down at the young wolf.
“Enid this is my uncle Fester.”
Enid smiled brightly at the man, waving her hand in greeting. From Fester’s shoulder, Thing returned the gesture. Fester, himself, didn’t do anything as he was too busy giving Enid a once over.
“I know you said she had a different style to us, but this wasn’t what I pictured.” He commented his head was still cocked like a judgment cat.
Even worse, his observation made Wednesday focus back on Enid. Her dark brown eyes moved up and down in the piercing way they do when she’s observing a crime scene. The blonde felt as if her ears had been set ablaze, and she prayed it wasn’t visible on her face. There is something about being checked out by Wednesday that made her stomach do flips. The feeling was no doubt amplified by how insanely good she looked right now.
“What are you wearing?” The goth finally asked, her eyebrow raised.
“It was the only thing I could find!” Enid said defensively.
“Come on, we’ll take you back to our hotel. Give you some real clothes.” Wednesday suggested offering her hand. Enid took it and allowed the seer to pull her up. For a moment they stood face-to-face, hand-in-hand and Enid started to relax again.
-
They walked along a cobblestone path. Enid could feel the locals eyeing her, apparently they didn’t see a lot of people cosplaying as a picnic table. The surrounding town was lined with buildings and shops. The smell of fresh baked goods fluttered through the air like butterflies on a summer day. Blue eyes shifted up to a sign that read La fromagerie de Roland.
Enid squinted her mind buffering like an old computer. Was that… French?
“Where are we?” Enid questioned.
“France, Paris to be exact.” Wednesday replied easily, not bothering to even look at Enid as she spoke.
“Paris!” The blonde eyebrow raised in shock. “How did I get to pairs!”
“I’m not sure, but it didn’t make finding you any easier.” Wednesday tested.
“Yeah, it took us almost four months!” Fester laughed but Enid felt her stomach sink, that feeling of being a burden creeping through into her ribs. Wednesday caught this immediately, of course, and shot her uncle a death glare before turning to Enid with a much softer demeanor.
“Pay him no mind, it was no trouble. I always enjoy a good hunt.” The goth remarked with a subtle smirk. Enid giggled and the knot in her chest loosened.
They walked the rest of the way in silence aside from the hum of Fester’s bike engine. Enid watched Wednesday as they walked. Her pale fingers played with the ends of her braids while the wind rustled her bangs. She’d gotten them cut since Enid had last seen her, back into the style they were when the two girls first met. Secretly Enid had always liked them better that way, but she would never say that aloud…especially not to Wednesday.
Suddenly Wednesday stopped and Enid nearly stepped on her toes trying not to bump into her friend. Wednesday looked at her like she’d lost her mind.
“We’re here!” Fester cheered from behind the pair.
-
The room was small even for a hotel room. Enid cold stand in the center of the room with her arms out and touch both walls without stretching. It had the standard white bed, a pull-out couch, some drawers, and a desk but that was it. The open windows let a subtle draft that made the teal curtains flow. Aqua eyes focused on the landscape. The sun had just started to set on the horizon in hues of pink and gold. There was a park below them. People walked along the sidewalk or sat on the white oak benches overlooking lime green bushes blooming with yellow peonies. The window encased the scene in clear glass like a painting.
“Here you are.” Wednesday appeared behind her while holding a pair of folded black, silk pajamas. “I know they’re not your preferred color pallet, but they will have to do.”
“These are perfect, Wednesday, thank you!” Enid beamed, but her attention was still locked on the window as if hypnotized.
“Something wrong?” The black-haired girl wondered.
“No, I just can’t believe I’m in Paris! I’ve always wanted to come here!”
“Why have you never?”
“No one else in my family was interested.” Enid said flatly. “We wouldn’t be able to afford it anyway, but it’s okay because I’m here now!”
Her peach lips twisted back into a soft smile as she passed Wednesday and disappeared into the hotel’s bathroom.
-
“So what are you gonna do?” Fester asked, his tall frame leaned against the open bathroom door.
“What do you mean?” The younger Addams replied. A toothbrush between her teeth.
“With Enid.” Fester elaborated. Wednesday raised an eyebrow. “Geez kid, do I have to spell it out? You're in Paris with your crush!”
Wednesday cursed as she spit minty foam into the sink. Fester was more perspective than he looked.
“So?”
Her uncle chuckled.
“You know sometimes I wonder if you're actually my brother’s child then I remember I might have been there when you were conceived…funny story actually! I was running from the cops and decided to hide at your place. I go up to your parents room and…”
“Uncle Fester!” Wednesday interrupted exasperatedly. Her pale features twisted into a grimace. “Your point?”
“I think what your uncle is trying to say is this might be a good chance to take her out, tell her how you feel.” Thing sighed from his spot hanging on the edge of the tub.
“Shouldn’t we have been more focused on getting Enid back home safely and away from hunters.” Wednesday protested.
“The motorbike needs some maintenance, we’re not leaving here for another day at least.” Fester corrected with a cocky smirk. Wednesday paid before replying. She could hear Enid snoring softly from the other room.
“I’ll think about it.” She conceded.
-
Wednesday went to bed when the moon was high in the starry night sky. The faint glow of yellow streetlights reflected off the moon. Fester and Enid had gone to sleep long ago. Enid, in particular, fell asleep in the bed almost immediately after her shower.
Wednesday weaved through the small room without making a sound. Her hands reached out for the unused pillow beside Enid. The goth tried her best not to disturb the sleeping wolf, but it didn’t work as Enid stirred.
“…’ Day?”
“Apologies Enid, go back to sleep.”
“What are you doing?” Enid sat up slightly in her elbows.
“I was just grabbing a pillow. It wasn’t my intention to wake you.” Wednesday explained.
Enid’s tired blue eyes scanned the dark room. When her eyes landed back on Wednesday there was a small pout on her lips. Wednesday hated that fact she found it cute.
“Fester took the pull-out, where were you gonna sleep?”
“The floor most likely.” The seer deadpanned, pillow still clutched in her icy grip.
“No way! We can share the bed.” Enid announced, scooting over and patting the space beside her.
“Enid, you don’t have to do that.” Wednesday protested. Her cheeks had grown warmer and Wednesday was thankful for the darkness of the room.
“No! This was your bed first. Come on, it's already late.” The blonde argued and Wednesday realized it would be easy to just comply.
Slowly Wednesday put the pillow back on the bed and climbed in. Her body was stiff as she laid down. She assumed her usual corpse-like sleeping position. Enid didn’t take her eyes off her until she was sure Wednesday was comfortable and tried to ignore how it made her heart race.
When the wolf decided her room was alright she laid back down with the grace of a rag doll.
“Night roomie.” Enid said through a yawn and before Wednesday could reply she was fast asleep again.
