Summary
Henry scratched at the raised lump in his neck, tears springing to his eyes. He scratched, and pulled, until the metal bit against his skin and Henry pulled his fingers away to catch specks of blood under his fingernails.
“There has been another successful transition.” Papa informed, his tone somewhat pleased. Almost satisfied, that he has turned another child into a monster like him. “I believe this child,” Papa looked away for a moment, almost in thought. “Will be different from the rest.”
Henry finally slowly sat up at the remark, his brow furrowed. “Different how?”
“He is stronger than the rest.” Papa nodded. “We will continue the experiments, of course. But once he is grown,” Only then, did Papa turn to him again, “You will keep a close eye on him. That will be your job as an orderly. Do you understand?”
Henry nodded, counting the child’s number over and over in his mind. Number Seven, the seventh child.
