The video was a bit grainy, but clear enough. It was an empty conference room with the Montreal Metros’ logo on the wall above the long conference table in the middle of the room, lined by chairs on either side of the table. One figure entered first, strongarmed by another directly behind him. The first was then shoved further into the room. The man stumbled a few steps, then righted himself as the other slammed the door shut behind them. It was then that the camera caught a good look at their faces: Coach Theriault of the Montreal Metros, angry as any man could be, and Captain Shane Hollander, helpless in the face of that fury.
Shane Hollander cowered under the coach’s gaze. Theriault paced a few times. Then, out of nowhere, he grabbed the nearest chair and hurled it across the room. Shane flinched back, knocking into the wall the same time the chair did on the opposite end of the space. The chair broke on impact.
“You know, I tried to let this go, Hollander. But you just don’t know when to quit.”
Hollander tensed. He took a small, cautious step away from the wall. “I’m sorry, Coach. I’m not sure what this is about.”
Theriault let out a sardonic laugh. He paced a few steps, ending up across the room, on the other side of the table. He bent down and picked up a piece of the broken chair, examining it in his hands with a wry smile. Then, he threw it with all his might at the player. It glanced off his shoulder and cracked in half. Shane made a small ‘oomph’ sound, his hand coming up to rub the spot of impact.
“You’re a fucking fag, Hollander! And I don’t want fags on my team!”
Shane curled into himself. In an ashamed tone, he said, “I’m sorry, sir.”
Theriault banged his fist on the table. “You fucking should be! This team is a wreck, and it’s your fucking fault, Hollander! No one wants a cocksucker as their captain!”
Shane nodded, like this was something he’d already accepted as fact. “Are you making someone else captain?”
Theriault’s lips curled. “Yeah, you’d fucking like that, wouldn’t you? Go crying to the world that you got your title taken away from you because you’re gay. As if it’s not what you deserve.”
Shane didn’t say anything. He didn’t say that he’d won nearly a dozen accolades on his own over the years. He didn’t say he’d single-handedly led this team to victory, twice. He could’ve said either one, hell, he could’ve said both, but instead he said neither. He just stood there, shoulders tense, like he was bracing for another impact.
Theriault circled the table, coming to stand in front of Shane. He shoved him backwards, hard, and Shane’s head hit the wall with a crack. He cried out, hand flying to the back of his head. There was a small splatter of red on the wall.
“You are on thin fucking ice, Hollander, you hear me?” Theriault said. “We play Ottawa tonight, and if you step one toe outta line or we don’t win tonight, there’ll be hell to pay. You understand me? I’ll make sure you never play another game of hockey in your fucking life. Not even in the damn beer leagues. Got it?”
Shane nodded. “Yes, Coach.”
Theriault sneered. “You fucking disgust me. And I bet you disgust yourself too, don’t you?”
Shane didn’t answer, just continued cradling the back of his bleeding head.
“Say it!” Theriault barked in his face. “You’re a faggot and a cocksucker and you like taking it up the ass, and you’re disgusted with yourself.”
Still, the man didn’t speak.
Theriault shoved him again. This time, his own hand cushioned the impact. Still, he winced.
“You wanna play hockey ever again? You wanna be carried outta here on a stretcher?” Theriault shouted, incensed.
Shane’s jaw tightened, clenched so tightly that it seemed his teeth might break. His hand fell to his side. A tense silence passed. Then, softly, voice dripping in shame, he said, “I’m a faggot and a cocksucker and I like taking it up the ass. And I’m disgusted with myself.”
Theriault took a step back. “You breathe one word about this to anyone, I destroy you.”
And with that, Theriault was gone.
Shane stood there for another moment, tense, like he was still waiting for more abuse. Eventually, he must have realized it wasn’t coming. Almost robotically, Shane pulled out a chair at the table and collapsed into it like his knees were just waiting for the right moment to buckle. He rested his elbows on the table, then dropped his face in his hands.
There was a short, soft buzz just picked up by the microphone.
In a trance, Shane dug his phone from his pocket. He pressed a few buttons, then left his phone face-up on the table as a voice message began to play.
“Hollander!” Ilya Rozanov’s voice came, tinny, but recognizable. There was an excited din accompanying his voice. “You are going down tonight! Ottawa will destroy Montreal! We will send you home crying like little girls!” His words were met by a cheer, as if he was in his team’s locker room.
Another voice, almost recognizable as Wyatt Hayes, shouted, “Montreal’s going down!” His words were met with more cheers.
“By the way,” continued Rozanov, “your milk was bad, so I had your mom go get some and she will bring it over after you lose so that you can have your special oat milk in the morning.”
Shane wiped under his eyes.
“Anyway, I wish you terrible luck and I love you!”
The voice message ended. Shane sat there, stone still. A few seconds passed before he pocketed his phone and forced himself to his feet. He listed to the side before righting himself. His steps were awkward as he lumbered to the door, almost like he was drunk. Or, more likely, concussed.
It took a few tries for him to open the door, then he walked out, and it clicked shut behind him. There was one final frame of the empty conference room, almost the same as it had been before the disturbance. All except for one chair askew, one chair broken across the room, and a smear of the captain’s blood across the Metros’ team logo painted on the wall.
The video ended.

I have spent days trying to draft this post, which is why it’s taken so long for me to make a statement on this. Not only is Shane a coworker of mine, or even a fellow queer hockey player who’d been outed against his will, but also my friend. We were at each other’s weddings. And yet, to my knowledge, not a single person has known what occurred in that room until now.
The video that has surfaced of Shane Hollander’s treatment by Coach Theriault is horrendous. It had physical violence, threats, and verbal abuse. And Shane Hollander, my friend, one of the nicest people I’ve ever known, was forced to take it.
Theriault must be removed from the MLH immediately. He has proven in this video that he is a danger to his own players. If Shane Hollander, team captain, award-winner, two-time Stanley cup champion, isn’t safe from this type of abuse, then who is?
And this is just one moment we’ve seen. Shane already looks used to it. He already seems prepared, like he knows what will happen. This was just two weeks after being outed. What has happened in the months since? The possibilities are terrifying.
Theriault has created an unsafe environment for his team. He has injured his own players to the point that they cannot play in games. And those players are forced to lie about the nature of those injuries.
I had hoped by coming out we could make some progress in the MLH. Clearly, we have a lot more work to do.

BREAKING: MONTREAL METROS FIRE COACH FOLLOWING UNIVERSAL BACKLASH
Montreal Coach Jacob Theriault was put on an indefinite suspension following a video depicting him assaulting captain Shane Hollander just weeks after Hollander’s relationship was outed. Since being outed, Hollander has confirmed his decade-long relationship with rival Ilya Rozanov. While the world thought they hated each other, the two were secretly seeing one another. And just months before being outed, they tied the knot while on Summer break.
The Metros’ Coach seemingly has not responded well. The video depicts Coach Theriault using excessive force on the captain, including calling him slurs and injuring him to the point that Hollander had to sit out of the game that took place later that day. Until the video was leaked, the story had been that Hollander was injured during pre-game practice.
The leaked video sparked outrage across the internet. Players in the MLH came out in droves in support of their fellow player, condemning the coach’s abuse and calling for his termination. The internet did what it tends to do, using Theriault’s words against him. In the video, Theriault threatened Hollander, then said “you disgust me” and forced Hollander to say the same about himself, including more vulgar statements and slurs. Since its release, the hashtag #theriaultyoudisgustme has been trending across all social media sites as a nod to what Theriault has said.
