Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

L was frustrated, to say the least. Almost two months of keeping his prime suspects in confinement and it yielded nothing. He had been extreme in his decisions of course. A case of this caliber required extreme action. People were dying, criminals yes, but people nonetheless. At a scale not before seen excepting wars. His prime suspects of course being an overzealous teenager and an idol.

He crunched on hard candy, showing his frustrations through the gnashing of solidified sugar. A mock execution while irregular, was certainly necessary. How better to force a reaction from a suspect than pressure. L reached for another candy, crushing it the same as before. He watched the footage of his two suspects being driven by his main suspects father. The first and second Kira. Of that he was sure.

Light Yagami, his main suspect and no doubt the first Kira, was staring steadfast ahead. Eyes not focusing, just open and blank. L would be impressed by his lack of emotion if he wasn't so disappointed. The second Kira, Misa Amane, the idol. She was still rattled. Having watched a gun be pointed and seemingly fired at your so called boyfriend would certainly be a cause of distress. But apparently not enough for her to showcase her powers as Kira.

This troubled L greatly, not at the thought that he may have perhaps falsely imprisoned two innocent youths, no, that was preposterous. Misa Amane had physical evidence proving her involvement, and of course Light Yagami had requested his own confinement. Ls conscience was clear. No, he was troubled because while he knew he had the right people, he still needed proof. Obviously with his connections and overall authority he could easily facilitate a nice clean execution. That was no fun, he craved the challenge. It was selfish yes, but when did he ever claim to be a paragon of morality?

Watching on, he continued to glare at the screen. Kira number one still staring blankly ahead. This was beginning to intrigue him. Why would the unshakeable Kira look so… empty? Light Yagami was infallible, had to be with the body count he achieved in such a small amount of time. Perhaps he refused to give L the satisfaction of any more reaction than he had. It didn't matter. Deducing what was going on in the boys head had been easy before, always trying to be one step ahead in their childish game. Because yes, this was a game. Why was Light just… staring?

L scratched at the cuff that was snug against his right wrist. This was so troublesome, but of course, extreme measures. The explanation of the cuff to the task force had gone as smoothly as it could have. The questioning of his sexuality was not exactly expected but the second Kira was hardly easy to predict. Lights calm regard to his newest form of confinement irked L, to say the least. A person in stress was more likely to slip up. Outmaneuvering his prime suspect was a delicate and exciting game. Alas this game would take the sacrifice of his own personal freedom. It didn't matter. L cared more about winning than his own comfort.

The day as well as the move into the new headquarters building was seamless. The task force chose their respective work areas that would best maximize their own productivity. Matsuda was busy showing Misa her new accommodations. While she was logically the more dangerous of the two Kiras, she would not act without direct order. And with the handcuffs in place, there was no way for Light to communicate to her in a way L wouldn't understand.

L finished up adding the permissions and aliases of the task force into the HQ system. He needed to ensure only the correct people had access, while retaining their anonymity. He glanced to his right. Hoping to watch the barely concealed relief yet stress that was a clear mixture on Lights face. He was certainly fascinating. Light seemed to be running on autopilot. Saying nothing but quiet conversation to the others. Some condolences, some kind yet forced remarks.

It was subtle, so very subtle that if L weren't confidently in tune with his own abilities he would have thought he imagined the reaction. His father, Soichiro Yagami, tenderly grasped his sons shoulder. He flinched, Light Yagami flinched. He suppressed his reaction as quickly as he made it. So unbelievably minute that L was determined to re-watch the interaction caught on the surveillance cameras tonight, while his suspect was sound asleep. It was so so small and yet visceral in the detectives eyes. He barely heard the words of support Senior Yagami was giving his son. Such kind words, he didn't doubt Lights innocence for a moment.

So why did he flinch?

Light seemed far more relaxed as the hours marched on. Made absolutely no complaints to the hour they finally started to make their way to their shared room.

"We are the only ones inhabiting this floor" droned as though he was giving a repeated lecture. "The room itself as well as the attached wash room are unmonitored."

"It's unlike you to be so trusting." Light stated thoughtfully. "I can't imagine you would just put yourself in a room with your supposed murder suspect with no added security."

"We both know you are no such fool to do something so rash as murder me with your bare hands. Trying to excuse my dead body being tethered to your own would be a feat, even for you."

Light appeared to be unbothered. It seems he would take what little trust he was afforded.

"I will attempt to be accommodating within reason", L continued his speech. "In terms of bodily functions and basic hygiene, you need but ask."

Light looked around the space. Noting it was made specifically for two occupants.

"I cannot promise that we will end our work day at the most convenient hour for your specific sleep schedule, but I can assure you I will make no attempt to disturb your sleep once we are in this room." L continued to watch his suspect inspect the room. He was currently looking at the large bed with an indecipherable emotion.

"As you can see my preferred armchair is within reach", L gestured to the opulent yet well used chair," I will not use the bed itself often but even I have my limits."

There it was again. The emotion L couldn't quite pick out. It was buried as quickly as the other unauthorized emotions Light Yagami did not permit himself to express.

"Do you need to use the facilities?" L was eager to re-watch his precious footage. He was quickly getting tired of being a tour guide and wanted the boy to sleep already.

"No, I have been looking forward to sleeping unrestrained in a bed all day." Light climbed into the pristinely made bed. Carefully adjusting himself on the left side of the bed, being sure to leave adequate space on the right. He watched L somehow gracefully perch himself on his chair. Light made the unknown expression again.

"You will find a sleep mask as well as noise cancelling headphones in the bedside table."

Light just watched L on his chair. Making no move to spread out in the large space that he was allotted. L observed Light staring at him in his periphery until he finally closed his eyes in an attempt at sleep.

L pulled up the days camera feed, thrilled to see his suspects reaction on repeat.
