“We’ll just mic you up for a shift or two,” Harris explains, waving the tiny microphone in Ilya’s face. “It’s not live or anything. We’ll just match up your commentary with some snippets of the game for social media. People have been asking for your version ever since we did it with Wyatt.”

Ilya pretends to grumble for a second longer, before he sighs and relents with a crooked grin. “Okay. It will be good for me, I can do commentary when I retire.” That gets a chorus of groans from the rest of the guys in the locker room. Ilya scoffs, “I will give great commentary. Very insightful. The fans will love it."

Harris mics him up for a couple of shifts in the first period, another in the second, and then asks Ilya if he’d mind just keeping the mic on for the whole of the third. Fifteen minutes in, and Ilya’s on the bench itching to get back on the ice. He’s practically vibrating when Coach taps him on the shoulder, and he dutifully hops over the barrier and onto the ice in one fluid movement.

He wins the face off against the Flyers’ centre, taking control of the puck with practised ease and barreling off with it towards their goal. He passes it to the wing when one of the Flyers’ big enforcers tries to hit him, ducking away and skating himself into a clear position to score. Their goalie is too far out of his net, and there’s a clear window of uninterrupted space that Ilya can visualise the puck sliding through. His wing passes him the puck and Ilya catches it deftly, then mutters, in a moment of cocky stupidity, “this one’s for you, Shane.”
Two things happen at once. Ilya draws his stick back just enough to get the leverage to send the puck into the net and drives it forward, connecting at a slightly wrong angle. At the same time, a Flyers defenceman he hadn’t noticed clips him on the shoulder, sending him spinning out into the boards.

The result? A nightmare.

“Did you have good day?” Ilya asks, pulling the covers up to his chin while he waits for Shane to join him in bed. 

Shane looks over from the other side of the bedroom where he’s shuffling things around in his duffle bag. “A really good day.”

“And did you change your mind about letting me fuck you tonight?”

Shane snorts, finally zipping his bag and trudging over to the bed to throw himself down on top of Ilya. "In my parent’s guest room? Not a chance.”

“You are missing out. I have ways to keep you quiet.”

Shane tucks himself under the covers, wrapping his permanently cold body around Ilya’s immediately. Koala, Ilya thinks. 

“You want to look my mom in the eyes tomorrow morning after she hears the bed frame squeaking all night?”

Ilya just mumbles something unintelligible to avoid telling Shane that no, he’d rather die than show his face in front of Yuna Hollander after defiling her son in her house. Shane lets him get away with it.

They lie there for a few minutes, Ilya carding through Shane’s hair. It’s the best holiday he’s had since– God knows when, really. Before his mother died at least, and probably ever. And then, because they don’t need to hide from each other anymore, he says as much. “Thank-you for sharing your family with me,” he whispers into the shell of Shane’s ear.

“Thank-you for becoming part of it,” Shane breathes back, a warm breath on Ilya’s collarbone.
