Hayden Pike reveals he can’t sleep well at night without Shane Hollander in the bed next to him.
In an interview, the star hockey player of the Montreal Voyageurs described the toll that communal living for games can take on players’ personal lives. The star discussed his struggles with insomnia over the summer, revealing that it stemmed from no longer sharing a room with fellow Voyageurs teammate and captain Shane Hollander.
“On the road, you get so used to living with someone else, you know. And Shane’s such a chill guy roommate too, no snoring or anything. His breathing was honestly like white noise to me—sent me straight to sleep on nights we shared the same room. I genuinely missed it over the summer.”

Interviewer: Do you think the existence of Shayden helped paved the way for you two? Did it give you hope that there is a sizable community that would support you were you to come out?
Shane: I’ll be honest, no. In fact, it might have made things harder. [He sighs] Despite what a lot of people seem to think, our secrecy actually had very little to do with my sexual orientation. Sure, the NHL isn’t the most LGBT+ friendly organization in the world, as organized sports in general isn’t, but between Scott Hunter’s incredible work with inclusive organizations like Trevor Project and more LGBTQ+ issues coming to mainstream conversations both inside and outside sports, the sexuality piece became much less of a deal than it was when we first started as rookies. I came out to my team a couple of years ago, and it wasn’t too bad. But the whole Shayden thing just terrified me even more because it was yet another way that the world saw me that I would inevitably disappoint my fans.

Shane: Ilya is obsessed with the online fanfiction about us for some reason — he loves to read them. I really don't understand the appeal, both from those writing these, uh, works, and also as a reader. He once showed me this one story where Hayden and I have supposedly been in a relationship since our rookie year, and I guess the entire story is about us hiding it through the years. I didn't scroll too far I'll admit [He laughs nervously]. But all of it was scarily similar to the whole, uh, situation with me and Ilya's relationship, and the timeline, and the secrecy. And the parts that I did read, about this fake Shane who comforted this fake Hayden — who can I just say, is one of the most confident and chill guys I know, it's what makes him such a good friend — through panic attacks and spoke pet names in Japanese to him and dreamed about taking him to Tokyo, I was just thinking wow, is this really how they see me? I mean, I don’t even speak Japanese. I've never been to Tokyo, and yeah it would be cool to go, with my heritage and all, but it's not my dream destination, if you know what I mean. And just, this is going to sound so stupid, I apologize in advance, but if there’s anyone getting comforted in any of my relationships, it’s me.
Ilya: [laughs] This made me laugh too, when I read. Shane is a beautiful anxious flower of a person. Is why part of why I love him so much.
Shane: Yeah exactly. My anxiety is pretty-known among those who know me well. So to see this confident, dominant captain persona that all these fans seemed to project upon me and believe wholeheartedly — I don’t know, it was really weird. It made me feel like revealing my relationship with Ilya, revealing that I’m not the man these hundreds of thousands of people thought I was — would be the end of everything.

I don’t know for sure if it was my fic Shane was referencing in his interview or another, but either way, I’m deeply saddened by the idea that my work has in anyway made Shane’s coming out journey and his relationship harder than it needed to be. Fanfic is meant to be a way to spread love, and I fear that all I’ve done is made things worse. (3/4)

I’ve always thought of fanfiction as being a space by fans for fans, and I’ve always written fic with that audience in mind.
