Chapter Text
“I’ve figured out how I want to tell everyone I’m pregnant.” Kara said suddenly. She and Lena were eating dinner together on Lena’s couch.
Lena raised her eyebrows. “How?”
“I’m going to get them all shirts that say Best Aunt or Uncle, or in J’onns case, Grandpa. Do you think he’d like being my baby's grandpa? Or is that too big of an ask?” Kara asked.
“He’d love being her grandpa.” Lena said. “I think that sounds like an amazing plan.”
Kara nodded. “Good. I really want her to still have grandparents. She’s only going to have 2, Eliza and J’onn, since neither of my parents are alive anymore and Livewire’s parents died a long time ago.”
“How are you handling that?” Lena asked. “I know that the pregnancy has been bringing up some feelings you haven’t really dealt with in the past.”
“It’s been tough.” Kara said after thinking for a moment. She still hadn’t really let herself feel the grief. “It’s unfair. Why don’t I get to have my parents involved in any of these milestones? I’m never going to get to tell my mom I’m pregnant. I’m never going to see the look on my dads face when he holds his granddaughter for the first time. I’m never going to get to see them again. And having a kid feels like I’m forgetting them by completely starting a new life.” By the end, Kara was crying.
Lena just rubbed her back and let her cry. “You aren’t forgetting them. They’d want you to move on. They’d want you to start a family of your own. I’m sure wherever they are, they are watching over you. Did Krypton have a religion?” Lena asked.
“Yes. We worshipped Rao, our sun. He provided for us and we prayed to him. We believed that when you died, you went to join Rao’s light. But now there’s no more Rao. So I don’t know what happened to my parents. I don’t know what happened to anyone.” Kara said.
“Just because Rao doesn’t exist physically anymore doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist at all.” Lena said. “If you believe in him, he’s still out there somewhere. He’s still protecting you the best he can. Your parents and everyone have all joined him.”
Kara wiped her eyes and smiled. “You know, that actually helps a lot to think of it that way. I like the idea that he still exists. Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me.” Lena said. “I’m here for you. For everything, the good, bad, and ugly, with no expectation from you. All I want from you is for you to just be yourself.”
“You mean it?” Kara asked.
Lena nodded. “Of course. You’d do the same for me, right?”
“Definetly.” Kara said.
“Then we don’t need to debate it. I’m here for you, just like you are here for me.” Lena said.
Kara spent the night at Lena’s, and Lena helped her find some shirts to buy for everyone. She insisted on paying. She’d stayed true to her word and Kara hadn’t paid for a single thing since Lena found out she was pregnant.
A week later, Kara was ready. She and Lena had prepared gift bags for everyone with their tshirt inside.
Everyone arrived and saw the gift bags on the coffee table. “What are these?” Winn asked.
“It’s not Christmas, or someone’s birthday, is it?” James asked.
Lena had her phone out, recording. “Nope. Everyone sit down first, and then you can open them.” Kara said.
J’onn sat down in one chair, Winn sat in the other, Alex and Maggie sat down on the couch, and James took an ottoman. Lena and Kara stood in front of them so they could see everyone’s reactions.
“Now open them.” Kara said.
Everyone tore in, and there was a moment of silence while everyone processed. Alex smiled, Maggie didn’t look shocked, while everyone else was shocked. Even J’onn was shocked.
“Wait, does this mean-” Winn asked. “You’re pregnant?”
Kara nodded.
Maggie just smirked. “I knew it.”
“Wait, what? How?” Kara asked.
“You completely stopped being Supergirl awhile ago and you’ve had some of the classic pregnancy symptoms.” Maggie said.
“Wait, Uncle?” James asked. “But we aren’t related.”
“On Krypton, close family friends were called Aunts and Uncles by kids.” Kara said. “Some cultures on Earth do it too.” Kara explained.
“Your kid is going to call me Grandpa?” J’onn asked, choking up.
Kara nodded. “You’ve been kinda like a dad to me since I became Supergirl.” Kara said. “You’ll be a great Grandpa.”
J’onn teared up and hugged Kara.
“I’m sorry that your baby isn’t going to get to meet their father.” Winn said.
“Mon-El isn’t the father.” Kara said. Everyone’s jaws dropped open.
“Who is the father then?” Winn asked.
“She’s the result of a one night stand.” Kara explained. She hoped that she didn’t have to reveal she’d hooked up with Livewire quite yet. She’d tell everyone eventually, but she didn’t want to have to deal with judgment from everyone.
“She’s a girl?” Winn asked. “How do you know that?”
“The other parent isn’t a man, she’s a woman, so my baby can only be a girl.” Kara explained.
“Wait, how?” James asked. “How did you even get pregnant from that?”
“Kryptonian biology.” Kara said. Everyone tended to forget she was alien because she looked human, and it frustrated her sometimes.
“How far along are you?” Winn asked.
“Three and a half months.” Kara said.
“Is this why you took a break from being Supergirl?” James asked.
“Yep. It wasn’t safe for me to continue.” Kara said. “I’m not going to be Supergirl for at least a year so I can get through the pregnancy and recover.”
Everyone nodded. “Who knows?” Winn asked.
“Everyone here and my doctors.” Kara said.
“Can we see the ultrasounds?” James asked.
Kara nodded. “Lena, you know where I put them?”
“They’re on your side of the bed I think. You were looking at them last night before you fell asleep.” Lena said.
Everyone did a double take. “When did Lena move in?” Alex asked.
“I haven’t moved in.” Lena said.
“But she does spend a lot of time here. Or me at hers.” Kara said.
“How long have you two been dating for?” Winn asked.
Apparently it had been obvious for everyone but them. “We went on our first date on Sunday.”
“Really? Only a few days?” Maggie asked.
“We were in denial before then.” Lena said.
Kara playfully swatted Lena’s arm. “You don’t need to tell them that. Just for that, you are grabbing the ultrasounds for me.”
“I would have done it anyway.” Lena said and grabbed them for Kara.
Lena passed them around. “Aww, so cute.” Maggie cooed. “I can already tell that I’m going to be stealing her away every so often so I can have some time with her.”
“Just give me warning.” Kara said. She’d already been expecting that people would want to have a chance to babysit her daughter.
“Have you chosen a name yet?” Winn asked.
“Not yet.” Kara said. Truth be told, she hadn’t even thought about it yet.
“Is the other mom going to be involved in her life?” Maggie asked.
“She’s dead.” Kara said in a dead-pan tone of voice. No one asked her questions related to her daughter's other mom after that, likely because they didn’t want to bring up painful memories. She was quite relieved at that.
After that, they started playing a game of Uno and continued their game night like normal, just with lots of questions for Kara.
It had been another 2 weeks since Kara told her friends she was pregnant. She’d started to show. It was now obvious, so the second that Eliza, Clark, and Lois stepped in her door, they’d know she was pregnant. She was nervous about them learning, but Lena had reassured her that she’d defend her if needed.
Lena had set the table and made dinner. Kara had tried to help, but Lena refused to let her, and made her just sit and do nothing.
Eliza came first. “Oh Kara, it’s been so long since I saw you!” She hugged Kara, and that’s when she noticed Kara was pregnant.
“How far along are you?” Eliza asked.
“Four months pregnant.” Kara said. “I’ll explain more once Clark and Lois get here.”
Eliza nodded and turned to Lena. “You must be Lena, Kara’s girlfriend. If you hurt her, no matter how high in power you are, I will come for you.”
Lena just smiled. “Don’t worry, I’d never hurt her.”
“Good.” Eliza helped Lena finish a couple of last minute tasks before everyone else arrived. Maggie and Alex arrived next, with Winn and J’onn coming shortly after. Of course Clark and Lois were the latest as they had to travel from Metropolis.
Clark and Lois finally arrived and saw Kara’s pregnant stomach. Lois immediately dropped her purse on the coffee table and hugged Kara. “Congratulations! How far along are you?” Lois asked.
“Four and a half months.” Kara said.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Lois said. “The baby will never get to meet its father.”
“Mon-El isn’t the dad. Livewire is the mom. But your statement is still true.” Kara said. She realized a few seconds too late that she hadn’t had a chance to tell all of her friends Livewire was the other mom yet. They were all staring at her in shock.
“Wait, what?” Clark asked. He was still staring at Kara in shock, seemingly just now realizing that Kara wasn’t the innocent 13 year old he’d found in that pod.
“I said, Livewire is the mom.” Kara said.
Lois was grinning while Eliza and Clark were looking at Kara in shock. “You had sex with a known supervillain?” Eliza asked.
“To be fair, I was drunk and it was just one time.” Kara said. She rubbed her belly protectively. “And I’m not too inclined to say that I shouldn’t have done it. Not a great idea, but it gave me my daughter.”
“Wait, where is this alcohol that can get you drunk?” Lois asked. “I think I need to see a drunk Clark.”
“An alien bar.” Kara said.
“You’ll need one of us to get in.” Alex said. “It’s more of an underground bar. You won’t be able to get in by yourself.”
“You got pregnant with Livewire’s kid?” Clark asked. He sat down to recover from the shock. Eliza had already recovered.
“I knew you were pregnant, but Livewire’s kid was unexpected.” Eliza said.
“How’d you know I was pregnant?” Kara asked.
“I got a consult call from an OBGYN’s office asking for consult since I am one of the top xenobiologists in the country.” Eliza said. “I just didn’t want to confront you.”
Kara nodded. “Thank you for respecting my space.”
“So, I heard you and Lena started dating?” Lois asked.
“We’ve only been dating for a few weeks.” Lena said.
Maggie coughed something into her hands that suspiciously sounded like “Bullshit.”
“What does she mean by that?” Eliza asked.
“These two were dating before they even realized they were.” Winn said.
“They went grocery shopping together since Lena stays over at Kara’s apartment so often.” Maggie added.
“I’m just glad they are finally together, now I don’t have to see Lena’s thoughts.” J’onn said with a wince. “She projects. A lot.”
Lena blushed. “I forgot about that power of yours.”
Both Lois and Maggie laughed while Eliza, Alex, and Clark looked uncomfortable. “She’s an amazing girlfriend.” Kara said. “Don’t judge her for her family.” When she said the last part, she looked straight at Clark.
Clark held his hands up in defense. “I won’t. Promise. I can see she makes you happy.”
“Good.” Kara said. “I won’t hesitate to defend her if it’s needed.” Kara said.
Clark nodded. “So, how are you handling the pregnancy?” Eliza asked.
“It’s been pretty smooth so far.” Kara said.
“Except for the mood swings.” Lena said. “Seriously, she can’t watch Disney movies without crying.” Kara blushed. Lena continued. “And now she is extra cuddly. She’s always been a cuddler, but it's worse now.”
“Wait, you two had cuddled together and slept in the same bed?” Lois asked. “And you claimed you were just friends?”
“They were clueless.” Alex said. “I’m glad they finally got together. How’d it happen anyways?”
“We were out to eat when a server said she’d never seen a couple more in love then us. Lena denied it and then I asked her if she’d like to make it true. She said yes and then I invited her on a date to the planetarium.” Kara explained. She loved the memory, how easily it had gone.
“Aww, you sound like a sweet couple.” Lois said.
“It makes me sick sometimes.” Winn said, with a grossed out look on his face. “It’s only been two weeks since we found out they were dating, and it’s only gotten worse.”
“So, how has Lena been treating you Kara?” Clark asked, narrowing his eyebrows.
Kara knew exactly why Clark was asking. He still didn’t fully trust Lena yet. She knew it would probably take him a while to warm up to her. “Amazingly. She’s been super sweet. She makes sure I eat, she takes me to my doctor's appointments, everything.” Kara said. “She’s the best girlfriend I could ask for.”
Eliza and Lois both smiled and Clark relaxed a little bit. “Good. Lena, you treat my cousin well. If I ever hear that you haven’t been, well, just remember that I am Superman.”
Oh lovely. Clark just had to threaten her girlfriend. “I can handle myself.” Kara said. “Please don’t threaten my girlfriend.”
“You threatened me.” Maggie reminded her. “I think it’s only fair someone does the same to you.”
“You gave a shovel talk to Maggie? Wow, that must’ve been so scary.” Winn said in a joking tone.
“Oh it was scary.” Maggie quickly said. “She laid out, in very detailed terms, exactly how she’d hurt me, and how easily she could hide a body.”
Everyone turned to look at her. “Well, clearly there’s a lot we don’t know about Kara.” James said. “Clark, you couldn’t have given me a warning that your cousin isn’t as innocent as she looks?”
Clark looked half ready to tear his hair out. “I didn’t know! I thought she was innocent. This whole dinner has really made me reconsider that.”
Lois just laughed. After everyone had calmed down from the shock, the dinner continued as normal. Everyone left, but both Eliza and Lois made her promise to update them on her pregnancy and let them know if she needed any help.
Kara spent the night at Lena's again. “That went well.” Kara said once they were both in bed.
“It certainly could’ve gone worse.” Lena added. “I’m just glad everything worked out and everyone was supportive.”
Kara nodded. “Now I’m ready to sleep. That was exhausting.” Kara fell asleep curled around Lena.
