Summary
The Winter Soldier, fresh out of the Potomac River and vulnerable, is stalked by Rumlow’s team before he can successfully make his escape. Dubbing the monicker Crossbones, Rumlow uses his privileges as Field Handler to collect the Asset with the promise he won't return him to Hydra, which is enough to get the Soldier to go along with it.
Meanwhile, news from America reaches a certain EKO Commander who can't pass up the rare opportunity of the Soldier being loose from his captors. In true dramatic fashion, and self-interest, Zemo decides to up the stakes for his own devices. Too bad Hydra--choking on the ash of their covert empire--isn’t ready to let their cherished attack dog go. Just to add fuel to the fire, having a new unauthorized Sokovian handler in play certainly throws a wrench into everyone's plans.
As for the Asset. Sgt. Barnes. Bucky. James... He just wants to learn who he is after everything, without others' opinions dictating how he's expected to act. But no one-not Rumlow, Steve, the Avengers, and certainly not Helmut-fucking-Zemo make it easy for him.
And Hydra just won't stop sprouting damn heads.

REAL NOVEL QUALITY. This fic is a holy grail to me i was looking this trope for decades. Non-fixed winter soldies + avengers post catws + FUCKING ZEMO + WITH WS PROTOCOLS OH GOD. Its all together damns… I didnt finish it yet but its awesome dude… Emotions and thoughts and Buckys inner dialoges are so good and the story is so smooth its crinimal… I read this non stop till 4 AMs for 3 days straight…

This is such a great one, especially showing the imbalance and how it may affect their relationship and lives. The initial reaction to Zemo slowly morphing into something more so smoothly it’s so natural. I love seeing the other povs, though I will say Zemo and Bucky’s are my favorite. I cannot wait to see what else is coming. :)
