Work Text:

The Watchtower was in chaos.

Flashing alarms painted the metal walls red, and the smell of ozone from shorting electronics filled the hall. Superman hovered above the main console, barking orders into comms at super-speed, while Wonder Woman deflected a blast of magical energy that had somehow phased through the station’s shields.

Batman, his jaw clenched tight, tapped rapid commands into his gauntlet.

“All planetary defenses are failing,” he growled. “We need a containment plan. Now.”

“This isn’t something you can punch or hack, Bats!” John Constantine snapped, jabbing a smoldering cigarette toward the window. “This is big-league magic, old as the bloody universe. The Rock of Eternity is cracking open! We don’t have time to argue about protocols!”

Zatanna floated above them, chanting backwards words under her breath as she reinforced the outer barrier around Earth. Sweat streamed down her forehead, eyes glowing bright blue.

Superman touched down next to her, concern etching lines into his face. “What do we do?”

Zatanna dropped to one knee, gasping. “We need the Champion. The true Champion of Magic — the one chosen by the wizard. Only they can fix the Rock of Eternity before the cracks swallow our reality.”

Wonder Woman’s eyes narrowed. “Who is this Champion? Where do we find them?”

Constantine spat a curse. “That’s the problem, luv. No one bloody knows. The Wizard was cagey even before he croaked. There’s only one way to get the Champion here: summon them. And hope they show up before something else does.”

Batman glared. “Summon who, exactly? For all we know, this 'Champion' is some eldritch horror.”

Zatanna looked up, eyes hard. “We don’t have a choice. We need them.”

The League assembled in the Watchtower’s grand chamber — a vast hall ringed by protective runes Zatanna had carved into the floor, each glowing with a pale silver light.

Constantine stood in the center, a massive circle of chalk and ash around him. He tossed a fistful of crushed gemstones into the air, murmuring guttural phrases that made the temperature drop sharply.

“Everyone ready?” he called, glancing around.

Batman stepped forward, cape curling like smoke. “Proceed.”

Wonder Woman drew her sword, its edge gleaming with divine magic. Superman hovered behind her, fists clenched.

Flash shifted from foot to foot, practically vibrating. “Uhh… if this Champion thing turns out to be a demon, we have a plan B, right?”

Constantine snorted. “Plan B is scream and die fast.”

Flash made a strangled noise.

Zatanna took a deep breath and spoke, her voice echoing unnaturally in the hall.

“Sretsnom fo cigam, dna stneicna fo rewop, esaelp gnorts eht llaC! Eripsed ot otni siht emoh, eht noipmahC eht gnirB!”

The runes flared, arcs of lightning bursting from the floor and crawling up the walls. The whole chamber trembled as a thunderous boom filled the room.

A single bolt of golden lightning crashed down in the center, blinding them.

When the light finally faded, a tall, muscular figure stood in the circle.

Red and gold. White cape.

Captain Marvel.

His chest emblem glowed like a living flame, his white eyes scanning the room calmly.

A long, stunned silence.

Flash gawked. “Wait… Marvel?! Like… Captain Marvel Marvel? The guy who smiles at parades?!”

Wonder Woman blinked, lowering her sword slightly. “You’re… the Champion of Magic?”

Superman took a step forward, confusion and relief warring on his face. “We thought we were summoning some ancient force. We didn’t realize—”

Captain Marvel glanced around at the shattered runes, the defensive stances, and gave them a bright, almost boyish grin.

“Hi, guys! You called?”

Batman stared at him, absolutely silent.

Constantine took a long drag of his cigarette, exhaled, and muttered, “Well, at least it’s not a tentacled nightmare god. That’s… good.”

Zatanna stumbled forward, still catching her breath from the ritual. “We— we didn’t know you were the Champion. The wizard chose you?”

Marvel nodded, expression softening. “Yeah. He thought I’d do okay.” His eyes flicked to the window, where a faint purple crack now rippled across the starscape. “But there’s no time to explain. The Rock of Eternity is tearing itself apart. If I don’t seal it now, magic as we know it is gone. And Earth goes with it.”

Batman’s eyes narrowed. “What do you need from us?”

Marvel cracked his knuckles, sparks dancing along his fingertips. “Cover. The Rock’s guardians will fight back, and some of that corrupt magic might try to spread. I can handle the seal, but I can’t babysit demons at the same time.”

Wonder Woman stepped forward instantly, sword gleaming. “We will hold the line.”

Superman nodded, determination settling on his face. “Whatever it takes.”

Flash raised his hand. “Uh… demon babysitting. Got it. Do I get hazard pay?”

Batman shot him a sharp look.

Flash sighed. “Fine. Volunteer work it is.”

They descended to the old subway tunnels below Philadelphia, echoing with ancient whispers.

Constantine muttered darkly. “I bloody hate this place. Always smells like bad beer and regret.”

Marvel marched up to a dead-end wall covered in archaic glyphs. He pressed a glowing hand to it, whispering a word in a language no one else understood.

A portal exploded open, crackling with blue and gold lightning.

“Stay close,” Marvel warned. “The Rock likes to… test visitors.”

They emerged into a cavern beyond comprehension — shifting stairways, floating platforms, rivers of raw magic coursing into a churning void. The Rock of Eternity stood at the center, cracked wide open like an egg.

Black smoke poured from the cracks, coalescing into twisted shadow beasts with too many limbs and burning red eyes.

Marvel shot upward immediately, lightning crackling from his body as he flew toward the Rock.

“SHAZAM!”

A titanic bolt slammed into the Rock, starting to seal the cracks — but instantly, hordes of creatures surged forward.

Superman flew straight into the largest cluster, fists like meteors. Wonder Woman spun her sword, cutting through the dark mass with divine precision. Flash zipped around the perimeter, creating vortexes to sweep stray demons back toward Diana.

Batman hurled rune-charged batarangs, each exploding into blinding flares.

Constantine and Zatanna formed a joint spell circle, weaving shimmering nets that lashed out to bind the creatures as they lunged.

Captain Marvel hovered above the Rock, body blazing brighter than the Watchtower’s lights. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he forced arcane energy back into the wound.

“SHAZAM!”

Another bolt crashed down, illuminating the entire cavern in a blinding storm.

The creatures howled, clawing the air. One massive demon lunged at Marvel’s back — but Wonder Woman intercepted, shield raised high as it slammed her backward.

Superman tackled another, smashing it into shards of shadow against a pillar of light.

Batman barked orders, reading the flow of the battle as if it were a chess match.

Zatanna shouted, “!TNEMNIAHCES EHT PEEK” (Keep the enchantment!)

Constantine roared curses in multiple dead languages, sweat pouring down his face as he reinforced the magical barrier.

Marvel’s face twisted with strain as lightning spiraled from his core, pushing deeper into the Rock. The black cracks resisted, pulsing angrily.

“SHAZAM!!”

A final, thunderous crash. The cracks sealed with a sharp snap, the corrupted smoke evaporating into golden sparks.

Marvel dropped to one knee atop the Rock, chest heaving. The cavern started to stabilize, pillars of magic flowing once again in ordered streams.

Wonder Woman ran up to him, catching his arm as he almost pitched forward.

“You did it,” she said, eyes shining with relief.

Marvel gave her a tired but genuine smile. “Team effort.”

Superman hovered down beside them, offering a hand to help him stand.

Batman stepped closer, eyes studying him intently. “Captain Marvel… or should I say… Champion.”

Marvel’s eyes flicked away. “…Guess the cat’s out of the bag.”

Zatanna joined them, shaking her head with an incredulous laugh. “All this time… you’ve been the wizard’s chosen. You’re not just a hero. You’re the magic.”

Flash zipped up, gaping. “You mean… you’re like, magic’s Superman? That’s so unfair!”

Constantine finally stumbled up, flicking away his cigarette. “Bloody hell. I thought you were just another cape. Didn’t realize you were carrying the whole cosmic spellbook in your back pocket.”

Marvel shrugged, sheepish. “I just try to help where I can.”

Batman folded his arms. “You’ve kept this hidden.”

Marvel looked at them all, his expression suddenly softer and more human. “I… didn’t want anyone to see me differently. I wanted to be just another hero, not a cosmic weapon.”

Silence.

Then, Wonder Woman stepped forward and placed her palm over his lightning bolt. “You are still the same hero. Only now, we know just how bright your light truly is.”

Superman clapped him on the back, a wide grin breaking over his face. “Next time, you don’t have to fight alone.”

Flash pointed accusingly. “Still unfair.” Then he broke into a huge grin and zipped away to punch a passing shadow wisp that hadn’t fully dissolved.

Back aboard the Watchtower, they sat together in the main lounge, exhausted but triumphant.

Flash stretched across two chairs, loudly describing how he’d saved Batman from a demon dog (Batman said nothing, but glared).

Zatanna sipped tea, her legs tucked up beneath her as she finally relaxed. Constantine commandeered a pot of coffee, ignoring Superman’s concerned look at how many sugars he added.

Wonder Woman and Superman tended to injuries, moving between the team like warm, patient healers.

Captain Marvel sat quietly, leaning against a window, gazing out at the curve of Earth.

Batman approached silently, standing beside him.

Marvel glanced over, smiling tiredly. “Hey.”

Batman nodded. “You should have told us.”

Marvel tilted his head, looking small for a moment despite his massive frame. “I didn’t want to burden anyone.”

Batman’s voice softened, barely above a whisper. “We’re a team. We share burdens.”

Marvel looked away, his eyes shining faintly with something like gratitude. “I’ll remember that.”

Batman gave a short nod and turned away — but not before letting a rare, small smile slip across his lips.

As the sun rose over Earth, lighting up the blue and white swirl below them, the League watched in silence.

Captain Marvel stood at the center, the golden lightning bolt on his chest glowing softly.

They had called for a Champion, fearing a monster.

Instead, they found a friend — one of their own all along.

The Champion of Magic was not a stranger in the shadows, but the bright heart of a hero they already trusted. And now, they would face every storm together.
