“I’m here because of you.” He swallows, and Alex hears the nervous tick of his jaw as he finally releases Alex’s hip, and draws the hand on his stomach away. “That’s not going to change.”
His mouth stays there, pressed close to Alex’s ear, the only thing louder than the drum of his own heartbeat. “Not when you sober up, and you remember what I’ve said. Not when you think about tonight and everything leading up to it. And certainly,” he pauses, licks his lips. “Not when you’re at home wondering why nobody loved you enough to stay.”
He takes a step back, and Alex blinks the club back into existence, disregarding the people around them and the music and the lights entirely in favor of flipping around to face him, confusion on the tip of his tongue.
Henry smiles wryly, almost guiltily. “Because I did,” He says, raising his voice to be heard over the music and nodding. “I do.”
