Summary
He and Mordred have been in the armory for the better part of half an hour, supposedly polishing swords, but Merlin can say with a fair bit of confidence that he’s the only one actually doing anything. Mordred has been rubbing the same spot on his sword with the same cloth for twenty minutes, heedless of the fact that if it gets any shinier it’ll probably blind them both, and maybe Merlin’s just being paranoid but there’s something about it that makes the hair on the back of his neck prickle and his magic hover on the tips of his fingertips. Mordred has a faraway, slightly vacant look on his face, so Merlin isn’t nearly as surprised as he’d like to be when Mordred asks abruptly, “How do you do it? How do you kill all these sorcerers and magical creatures and live with yourself?”
Or: one meaningful conversation between Merlin and Mordred leads to another, and then another, and before he knows it, Merlin's getting ready to throw caution to the winds and join forces with Mordred.
