“You brought me here to look at flowers?” he asks, and while Lan Xichen can’t make out his tone, he shakes his head.
“Actually,” he slowly says as he leads Jiang Cheng further into the garden, “I brought you here for this,” he then says and points at the butterfly house.
Jiang Cheng sucks in a surprised breath and Lan Xichen fears for a moment that he really fucked this up, but then Jiang Cheng smiles at him and impatiently tugs on his arm to get inside the house faster.

“Tomorrow,” Jiang Cheng gives back and then makes a noise as if he’s dying. “Fucking hell, I’m a dead man. If I show up tomorrow without anyone in tow—without someone in tow who can give Lan Wangji a run for his money—then I am dead.”
There’s a beat of silence and then Lan Xichen says “Take me.”
Jiang Cheng blinks a few times, processing the words, but even after a full minute they don’t make any sense.

“You are right,” Lan Qiren quietly tells him, after Lan Xichen puts a steadying hand on his shoulder. “Your core is strong and well developed, but you’re using less than half of the potential you have. Your potential is almost endless; you certainly have more than Wei Wuxian, and maybe even more than Wangji has.”
“I see,” Jiang Cheng whispers as those words hit him.
So he could be better if only he tried harder, Jiang Cheng thinks, and the thought is accompanied by the now so familiar frustration.
“But it’s not your fault that you can’t access your full potential,” Lan Qiren goes on and when his face goes hard Jiang Cheng flinches back. “Part of your core has been sealed.”
That makes Jiang Cheng freeze.
“What?” he whispers as panic bubbles up inside of him. “Sealed?”
