It is not loneliness. It is simply a life with appropriate margins, and she has long since stopped wishing it were otherwise.
And then Himeko, who researches restaurants before she boards the plane and remembers throwaway things said months ago and shows up without pressure and stays without being asked, looks at all of it — every guarded corner of her, every door kept mostly shut — and stays anyway.

Even back then, Himeko had known—Kafka was a storyteller, and not even five years of retirement could snuff out that flame.
It’s an issue. A big one.
Because if Kafka gets this role, then the ghost becomes flesh. The phantom gets a call sheet, a trailer, a wardrobe rack. Three months of shared scenes and early mornings and Yao Guang’s terrifyingly intimate notes on eye contact. If Kafka gets this role, Himeko will have to stand across from her every single day and pretend that the last five years did not leave a strange little bruise somewhere beneath her ribs.
