    And so, they grow. Into people. Into versions of themselves that neither child would recognize.

    Elphaba becomes braver. Sharper. She doesn’t flinch at stares anymore, though they still come. The Gillikinese that the girl had taught her becomes something more. They are whole conversations now, scrawled in notebooks she hides from her father.

    The image stays though. Of a pointy hat blowing in the wind. A poppy in blonde curls.

    Sometimes she wakes with grass stains on her clothes and laughter in her chest that doesn’t belong to anyone she knows.

    Sometimes, she swears the hat calls her name. In every dream, she almost catches up.

    She never does.

    By the time she’s twenty, she doesn’t dream of catching up anymore.
