His expression morphs into something between fear and disbelief and he takes a step closer, her arm held to his chest. “What are you talking about? What do you mean I don’t want this?”
“I heard what you said today. To Donnie. I shouldn’t– I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, I swear, I was…looking for you. And I heard you. I just wish you would have talked to me instead of, I don’t know. Instead of trying to get rid of me.”
Frank gawks at her. “That’s what you think this is? You think I’m too chicken-shit to talk to you about how I feel so I, what, concoct some fucked-up strategy to get you to leave first? Jesus, Mel, is that really what you think of me?”

Frank had noticed it right away, of course, the smell thing, as soon as Robby had introduced her—the pleasant, neutral scent of beta and then the immediate sharp undercurrent of something really, really delicious, like a ripe strawberry that he wanted to dig his teeth into so badly that his mouth began watering.
He had to cover his nose with his fist after that, wondering if a fan had caught her hair weird or something, because why the fuck could he smell her from all the way across the room?
It took him about an hour or two into the shift to come to the somewhat-harrowing conclusion that—shit. Goddamnit. She only smelled like that to him.

Summary
Frank was here. At a speed dating event. Which meant that he’d spent his evening sitting across from a dozen other women, looking for the same thing she was - a relationship.
The realization made her stomach sink. For months now, she’d been telling herself there was a reason Frank hadn’t made a move. Maybe he wasn’t ready after the divorce. Maybe he wasn’t even interested in dating at all - maybe he was too busy with work and the kids to even think about it. But he was here, which meant none of those things were true.
Frank wanted a relationship - just not with her.
