After secretly defying her family’s wishes, Caroline prepares to traverse the fog of London in support of her friends. Her fingers brush against a special copy of Jane Eyre.
A canon-divergent re-imagining of Shadows of London 2 featuring some major plot changes, deeper exploration of character relationships, and resolution of loose ends from the original story.
This fic was planned before any relevant event stories, side stories, author Q&A, etc. were released. However, it does incorporate quite a few elements introduced in these post-main story media.

The black butterfly haunts Caroline wherever she goes. The death of her parents, the arrival in London, and now even Jesse Lindvall himself. But what does it mean, and can she escape whatever fate or curse it brings?
A retelling on the events of Shadows of London by Time Princess, the events of The Black Butterfly happens two months before the epidemic that plagues London. Instead of Caroline falling for either Edward Grey or Vincent Savile, she finds herself tangled in an arranged marriage with Jesse Lindvall.

Summary
We revisit Shadows of London from the mixed points of view of Edward Grey and Vincent Savile. The parallels of their narratives compel me so, and I am always interested in the dynamic between a vampire and a vampire hunter.
This work will refer to canon events and conversations; until it doesn't. Where we've got the "either/or" options in canon, I've picked and mixed, omitting some, blending others.
In my version of events, Edward Grey is not responsible for the epidemic, and the majority of the events of canon Chapter 2 are completely irrelevant.
Being a Brit who lives close to London, with friends and relatives who've lived there; I have renamed certain things from canon to be more accurate; and I have also fleshed out certain locations. I have also tried as best I can to provide more social and historical context.
I'll try and note any major changes or bits of context in the author notes, as well as any tidbits of information that might be relevant.

The title is inspired by that of the Sherlock Holmes novel, “A Study in Scarlet” by Arthur Conan Doyle.
