If it hadn’t been for Ashton’s existence, chances are Calum would be turning to Michael for comfort, and Michael might not have done a very good job, but he would have tried his very best. Because that’s what he always does for his friends, especially Calum.

Summary
If Michael had questioned it, Calum would’ve told him that he didn’t want him wearing something so old, so worn down, but the truth is that Calum wanted to keep this one hoodie here with him. The fabric smells like Micael, and when he closes his eyes at night, it almost feels like he’s wrapped up in him. It brings Calum comfort, and ultimately, it’s what lulls him to sleep.
Today, Calum had needed that comfort. That’s why he kept the sweater on all day. It wasn’t just that he missed Michael after four days without him, which he did, but also that he’s been feeling nervous and jittery all day, worried about today’s game, and Michael wasn’t here to help ease his nerves.

The excitement and hype doesn’t entirely make up for the things Calum misses when he’s on tour. He aches for the lazy days sitting by the pool in the sunshine. He longs for late start mornings where Roy is making pancakes in the kitchen. He dreams of the simplicity of going for a walk down the street and not having ten plus people stop him for a photo.
Most of all, he misses Duke.
The scruffy little mess of a dog is his best friend, the only person who really knows all his secrets. The soft fluff of his fur is the world’s best comfort, always there for Calum to run his fingers through when he’s stressed out. His tiny beating heart calms Calum’s in a way that nothing else on this earth can. His grumpy old man grumbles can pull a laugh from Calum’s chest even at his worst moments.
Leaving Duke behind when he goes on tour is the hardest thing he has to do.

Michael lets out a sound halfway between a gag and a sob, his head hanging low between his shoulders, hands braced against the dining table. “We missed our fucking flight, Ash,” he says. “We’re in Europe, it’s three days until Christmas and our plane takes off in less than an hour, so we’re stuck here and I won’t get to see my family, which means Christmas is ruined ‘cause Luke and Cal actually made it to the airport in time to get on the flight ‘cause they’re not absolute fucking morons, so I’m here with only you to keep me company for the holidays and—”
“Okay, first of all: Ouch, thanks a lot, didn’t realise you find my company that miserable,” Ashton cuts in as he takes a step back, letting his arm drop to his side. “And second: It’s not like that plane was the last one to ever depart from here. We’ll find another way to get home, we’ll book a different flight.”
In which Ashton and Michael miss their flight home for the holidays and are forced to spend Christmas together.

“Look, let’s start here!” Luke says excitedly and points behind himself at the Ferris wheel, “let this be the beginning of your new life!”
Before he can argue, Luke starts dragging him towards the line next to the attraction, Michael looks wistfully at the pretzel stand over his shoulder, cursing the moment Luke filled out and became taller and stronger than him.
“You know I hate heights,” Michael says, looking up at the attraction and feeling dizzy already.
“Yes, I know. But you gotta start taking risks again, okay? And today, that means riding the Ferris wheel, tomorrow, who knows?”***
Michael doesn't understand how riding a Ferris wheel is supposed to turn his life around, but when the guy manning the ride doesn't let him sit with Luke and sits Michael with a cute stranger instead, he thinks Luke might be right, and that Ferris wheel might actually change his life.
