Ryland Grace is 8 months into his and Rocky’s journey to Erid, and he has long since remembered a detail about himself that had been forgotten in the wake of the amnesia, and ignored in the chaos of saving stars. It’s disheartening, really, Ryland thinks, to realize that even if you forget what your mother’s voice sounded like, you’ll never forget the irrational worry embedded in the very fibres of your being.

Vincent put his hands on Thomas’ like he had done in the Room of Tears, and spoke in almost a whisper. “I cannot do this without you, Thomas. This is not my place, these-” he gestured desperately at the air around him, hoping that Thomas would understand that he was referring to the Curia, “are not my people. I have faith in God’s plan for me, and if this is His will, I will carry this burden, but the inner-workings of the Vatican- the politics- I do not have the faintest idea of how to navigate.”
“I’ll stay.” Thomas said, “Not for the sake of the Church or the Curia. For you.”

“Are you alright?” Bellini gripped Lawrence’s elbow to stop him from going any further, his eyes wide with concern.
Lawrence was not alright. Lawrence wished that God would strike him down right there and end his suffering. The pain behind his eyes was unbearable, and he guessed that he only had a few minutes of composure left before he would no longer be able to speak in coherent sentences. Every sound and smell within the Basilica caused his head to throb violently, and he needed nothing more than to escape to a dark room. “Of course I am.”
Bellini reluctantly let go of his elbow. “Are you lying to me?”
“I wouldn’t lie to you.” God, forgive me, thought Lawrence. He would confess his sins tomorrow, but today, he could not be the reason that Aldo worried. He knew he had caused the man enough trouble during the Conclave, as well as a lifetime of worrying throughout their entire friendship.
Or: Lawrence can no longer ignore the migraine that had been building throughout the Conclave, and Bellini worries about him.

Mycroft knew immediately where this was going, and complete and utter terror filled him, although this was only visible through his eyes, which began to display a look of fear that Sherlock had seen countless times before, a look of fear reserved only for him.
“I’m remembering the governor.” Sherlock said as he began to point the gun towards his own chin.
“Ten.”
As Sherlock began to count down, Mycroft remembered the first time he had laid eyes on this particular sight, Sherlock with a gun to his head, and Mycroft in front of him, paralyzed with fear."
In which Mycroft remembers a familiar sight, and one faithful, rainy night.

He brought the pipe down again, and somewhere in the haze of it he was laughing, just a little, just under his breath...
"Okay," he heard himself say, breathless, grinning, sweat at his temple, voice gone a little ragged around the edges. "Okay, okay, we're— we're about done here, Rupert, buddy, we're— "
He didn't finish the sentence. He wasn't sure it needed finishing. He stood there afterward for a moment longer than the job strictly called for, chest heaving, blood roaring pleasant and warm through every part of him, riding the tail end of it the way a man rides out the last few seconds of a firework, not wanting it to be over, already a little sad that it was.
Then, because he was still Ted, because he was always, underneath everything, still going to be Ted, he straightened up, wiped his forehead with a towel he'd thought to bring, and looked down at what used to be Rupert Mannion with an expression that, on anybody else's face, might've passed for tenderness.
"There now," he said softly, mostly to himself. "All better."

He wasn't going to let the thoughts win. That part he was sure of, had been sure of since Henry was born, a promise he made in a hospital room to a baby who couldn't understand a dang thing, yet he said it and made a vow: I am not going to do that to you. I don't care what it costs me. You are not going to grow up carrying the thing I've carried.
He hadn't specified the terms, back then, hadn't thought through what "that" would come to mean over the next years, hadn't imagined that the promise would eventually mutate into something with far more tentacles than the original sentence suggested. It became not just I won't kill myself which had been the plain meaning of it, but I won't be seen as anything less than fine, ever, by anyone, because being anything less than fine is the first step down a road that ends in—
So yeah, he wasn't going to do that. But the pressure had to go somewhere. It always had to go somewhere, and he'd stopped, a long while back, believing he had the right to put it anywhere near another living person.
In which Ted Lasso self-harms as a means of avoiding the more permanent solution to his pain.
