    “It is routine,” Leon cut in sharply.

    The silence that followed was immediate. Chris stared at him like he didn’t recognize him. Leon felt it, like something cracking open in his chest.
    So he doubled down.

    “That’s the job,” he added, colder now. “You don’t get to pick when it’s convenient.”

    Chris flinched. It was small and barely noticeable, but Leon still saw it. And it made something inside him twist so violently he almost lost his footing.
