When the world finally stops ending, most of the Shatterdome staff head home.
(There are no pilots left save the three who don't have a home to go home to. There are no scientists left save the two that made their home in each other. One LOCCENT officer remains, but he made his home here in Hong Kong long ago.)
All that is left is a skeleton crew.
And once it’s just a skeleton, well-
It’s no shock that the ghosts start taking hold, haunting those that are left.

It’s not as if the revelation about Alice comes as a surprise.
Tendo notices the eating habits. Mako notices the clothes. Herc notices the mommy issues. Raleigh notices the cruelty.
And Hermann? Hermann notices everything.
The real challenge is figuring out what to do once the world breaks and they have to pick up the pieces of Newt that are left.
(When Newt starts dating Alice, everyone is shocked- they all expected he'd end up with his drift partner- but they're happy for him-
Until the warning signs begin and it becomes very clear that Alice is chipping away at something within Newt.

A little part of him raged at the thought of anyone leaving Hermann to his own devices — not that he wasn’t more than capable, but Jesus, Hermann shouldn’t have to be the only one who cared about himself! What kind of husband would leave their partner halfway across the world (Newt assumed) in a place as cold and clinical as a Shatterdome! The guy had to be a massive dick, and Hermann deserved better. He deserved someone who would take care of him. Someone who was here.
Or: Newt thinks Hermann's husband is seriously lacking.

Hermann is a blanket stealer, a thrasher, and a sleep talker. The sleep talking, in particular, Newt wouldn’t mind. It was actually kind of hilarious, and Newt is considering bringing his recorder to bed sometime, but Hermann also gesticulates in his sleep and Newt has woken up twice at this point with a smack in the face and Hermann grumbling nonsense beside him.
Sharing a bed with Hermann is also, without a doubt, the best sleep he’s had in ten years.

He’s not sure how he ends up there, the minutes prior to it a blur, panic and fear and pain, but not his, not his—Newton’s, and then he’s shoving his way past the medical personnel.
Newt’s huddled in a corner, rocking slightly, eyes wide and terrified, and another one of the nurses reach for him—
“Stop!” Hermann shouts, practically knocks the nurse over, throws himself in front of Newt as if shielding him. “Stop, can’t you see, he’s—he’s terrified!”
They murmur amongst themselves, and Hermann shifts from foot to foot warily, a snarl just below the surface, ready to hurt anyone who tries to touch Newt—
