Summary
Shane Hollander is tired of wanting someone he cannot have, and he’s dying as he waits for someone who will not stay. Someone who doesn’t want to stay, not when there are so many others waiting for him. Fun of another variety, Shane left a treat amongst many.
It’s humiliating. It’s distracting. And it feels like shit.
He wishes he could erase his feelings, move on as easily. In an effort to gain back control over the ‘situation’ that has become his romantic attraction to a notorious player, Shane attempts at imitating Ilya Rozanov’s methods until he perfects them and becomes as good as keeping it light and casual as his rival.
Or Shane tries to Hoe Phase himself into a self discovery journey to choke and kill his feelings for Ilya Rozanov. Ilya is not the only who suffers from it, but he sure feels like he’s being choked and killed.

Summary
Shane is sipping on a White Claw, doing his best not to zone out and check his phone for the fiftieth time, when someone claps him on the shoulder and says, “You’re pretty gifted, kid.”
There’s a brief pause, like always, where Shane’s lost as to how to react before the silence starts to get way too awkward. “Thanks,” is the apt, monotone response he chooses to go with.
If someone, for whatever reason, required a condensed version of understanding the psyche of Shane Hollander, this interaction would pretty much cover it. Jesus — Shane wants to get the hell out of here.

Canon Divergent plot: Shane never gets injured during the All-Stars game. Ilya breaks things off with Shane after he returns from Russia. Scott Hunter never wins the Stanley Cup.
The butterfly effect reverberates through Shane’s whole life like shifts in tectonic plates.

Summary
Shane and Ilya have been together--officially-- for two years, and it's been going relatively well despite all the itty-bitty bumps on the road. Having to date in secret is never 'light and breezy'. It's definitely not light and breezy when Shane's childhood best friend visits.
It's okay at first, nudged shoulders and inside jokes Ilya didn't understand. The second the nudges got too intimate, when the jokes got too sexual is when he realized something was off.
He stays quiet, plays along, tries his fucking hardest not to punch Nathan goddamn Hales square in his annoyingly handsome face.
When Ilya does talk to Shane about it, admittedly in the worst way possible, a fight breaks out. regrettable word choices are made, and a door is shut.
And it was all Nathan fucking Hales fault.
