No one had ever looked at him the way she did, and it was her eyes that he fell for first.
He'd had fans in the Empire, but not like her. They admired him in a way that said they wished they could be him, nothing but envy and competition. They admired him for his ability to hurt and strove to be more like him, and she admired him for his ability to heal and how it differed from her own. Because she had her own abilities. It was addicting, those looks. He found himself going out of his way to help people just so he could tell her about it later and see the way her eyes would go honey coloured as she adored him.
No one had ever looked at him like that.

Summary
After eons of being buried in a temple, not quite fallen but certainly not welcome back in Heaven, the angel has a stroke of luck in the form of a lost man of God stumbling right into his clutches. The piety in the man's spirit keeps the angel from draining him with abandon, and he offers some of his own lifeblood in return to express his gratitude. But once the man is young and healed again, his scent stirs a different instinctual hunger inside the angel. He had never taken a mate, had no cause to back in Heaven, but now all he wants is to take and claim.
That this human is the physical opposite of what he requires is of no consequence. Angelic blood can alter mortals for a reason. All there is left to do is to turn this promising creature into his perfect little mate.

A different, pornier take on why the angel chose to give his lifeblood to John Pruitt, based on my initial theory of where the show was going circa episode four: that John was going to fully metamorphose into another angel.
