Summary
He tried to tell himself it was nothing. Just a girl. Just a customer. But the more he thought about her, the more tangled it all became. Wanting her. Needing her. The intensity of it didn’t make sense, and that bothered him more than anything.
Luke had never felt this way before—especially not about someone he barely knew. He scoffed under his breath, calling himself an idiot, a bitch-whipped fool for even thinking it. And yet… this bitch, this woman, felt different. Like someone he wasn’t supposed to lose before he’d even had the chance to know her.
She was beautiful, sure—but it was more than that. The way she smiled, the careful way she chose her words, her soft voice like she was afraid of saying the wrong thing. It played over and over in his mind. She wasn’t loud or reckless or temporary.
She was the kind of girl he could picture in his future—sitting across from him at a kitchen table, laughing quietly, building a life he didn’t even realize he’d been missing.

“go get me a belt.”
“No—please, I—”
Luke moved fast, closing the space between them, bending down until they were eye level. His voice dropped, low and lethal.
“Did you just tell me no?”JJ’s heart was slamming so hard it felt like it might burst right out of his chest. “No,” he rushed. “No, sir.”
Luke straightened, towering again, expression unreadable.
“Then go to my room,” he said. “Get me a belt. Now.” -

Summary
“Are… Dad… are—are we gonna… go to McDonald’s?” JJ asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Luke pulled out of the parking lot and glanced over at him. “Do you think you deserve McDonald’s?”
JJ stared down at his lap, fingers twisting together, then nodded.
Luke shook his head. “You’ll be lucky if you eat anything tonight.”
JJ turned toward the window, the world outside blurring as a tear slipped down his cheek. He didn’t make a sound.
“J… look at me.”
Slowly, JJ turned back. Luke took his eyes off the road for a second, just long enough to see his face.
“Wipe your face.”
JJ turned away again and rubbed at his cheeks with the backs of his hands, trying to erase any proof he’d been crying.
“You need to start behaving,” Luke said, his voice low and sharp, “before I spank you so hard you can’t sit for a week.”

Summary
The next afternoon, JJ and John B went around the back of the cafeteria and hauled the trash can lid up just enough to get their hands in. The stink hit first. John B grabbed a milk carton that felt warm in the wrong way, and JJ scooped up a clump of cafeteria noodles, scraped in whatever goo was stuck to the side then dumped it all into a Styrofoam cup. He unzipped his backpack, tore the corner off a knotted plastic bag from B dock, and squeezed a lump of fish guts in on top. John B made a face. “Dude.”
“Shut up and watch,” JJ said. Ketchup packets between his teeth, ripping and squeezing until it turned into this slimy red soup.
A collection of little feral Pogues one-shots. Mostly JJ-centric, with friendship, all kinds of shenanigans and shitty parents all around.

Summary
He didn’t think. Not in words. It was noise. Sensation. The sting on his cheek, the hum in his jaw, the stupid ringing in one ear.
It all stacked wrong, years folding over each other until he couldn’t tell which version of himself was standing here bracing for the next hit. His chest locked the way it always did. Then the static glitched.
Pope’s hand fisted in his hoodie, “bro, no, I’m right here”; Kie’s thumb under his eye, telling him to breathe; JB tossing a blanket over him, muttering “sleep before you fall over.”
Fast. Crooked. Wrongly timed like his brain couldn’t decide which reality he belonged to.And then a drop straight through his chest that took his breath with it:
I don’t deserve that shit.
_______Four times JJ said "No More", and the one time it actually mattered.

Summary
Big John had finally agreed to let JJ come over to their house to hang out. Something John B had been begging for since they first met halfway through second grade and after their official declaration of becoming best friends at the start of third grade. But despite the begging, Big John never relented, telling his kid — who would promptly relay the information to JJ — that he didn’t want anyone over who might break something. Which translated to “I don’t want to lose any of my precious research on the Royal Merchant that is way more important than my son’s happiness.” At least that’s what John B said it meant.
But finally, after three years of persistence, Big John relented and JJ was heading home with his best friend.
And JJ was…excited. Sure. He was curious to see his best buds home, know what his room looked like, where John B spent his days away from JJ.
He also knew that homes could be sketchy.
