    “Re-start the count.”

“You sure?” Fatin checked, watching her like this was a fundamentally important question. Like it was a confession.

Leah shifted to look out the window of the cabin, peering into the dark, impenetrable forest that surrounded them, the fire in the hearth the only light source for what must have been hundreds of miles.

A single beacon in an abyss.

    “I’m sure. Re-start the count.”

    Summary

Kissing Fatin is like a sedative; not in the way where someone’s forcibly injecting some cocktail directly into her bloodstream, but like something that sinks into her gums, makes all the edges and corners of the world look like around, not through; around, not over. Kissing Fatin is the opposite of smoke and mirrors, the opposite of gunpoint, the opposite of pressing her thumb against the sharp side of a knife just to see if it’ll cut.

Kissing Fatin makes every moment after something to look forward to. It’s so simple, so miniscule, so inconsequential: Life can be good again, if she lets it.

    Summary

Fatin saw Martha’s curiosity at the cards they were all pulling out first, the emotion matching Shelby’s before both flipped to perplexed. A glance around the group turned up more furrowed brows, but Dot was the first to reach something awfully close to fear, wide eyes shooting right to her.

Suddenly, she couldn’t wait another moment. Fatin ripped through the envelope Leah left for her to read the same fancy invitation they all received.

And, for the first time in a long time, Fatin thought she might just die.

Or: Out of the blue, Leah decides to get married. Fortunately, Fatin Jadmani is scared of her own feelings, but not of crashing a wedding.

    Summary

But ever since she and Lizzie had begun to grow closer—had become best friends instead of friends instead of frenemies instead of enemies—she'd been forced to reckon with feelings that she'd only be able to ignore if she lacked her humanity. (Maybe not even then.)

And she'd been working with Miss Tig, and her other therapists after Miss Tig left, about not entirely repressing her feelings and emotions, because it's not healthy to bottle things up and deny yourself the truth and et cetera, et cetera. Whatever, she knows the spiel.

So, she acknowledges it, but only to herself. Just so she won't blow up and overflow from denial.

And if that means her smiles get a bit tender, and her touches last a bit longer, sue her. She's trying her best. To be a good best friend.
