    Summary

Home, to Ava, is flannel-backed chairs and worn quilts and lacy placemats and a rocking chair they find abandoned on the side of the road.

Home, to Beatrice, is Ava’s hand in her own as she drags Beatrice through the kitschy home store four towns over and Ava’s shout of triumph when she finds a matching set of salt and pepper shakers and Ava’s waggling eyebrows when they buy the bed that she (again) calls ours.

(Six days in Switzerland, and then a few more afterwards.)

All the strays came up to South Bend for the holidays. Even Jonathan came to visit. Distant as he was, he sat in the corner nursing a glass of cider, watching with a smile as Nancy and Robin slow-danced in their living room to Ella Fitzgerald. He saw high school friends, an old girlfriend, his little brother and his D&D friends. They had jobs now, or had come back from college. Maybe not unscathed, but still standing. Still smiling and laughing, singing and dancing. Celebrating something.

This is Hawkins, Indiana. Basketball is king. Nobody really cares about ice hockey, except for the girl's team captain, and maybe the marching band member who volunteers to show up to all of her games.

    Summary

Beatrice finds herself musing not over duty and sacrifice and God, but the truth of angels, if they can be created rather than summoned. If they can take the form of women with overeager mouths and careless limbs and eyes with a depth that beckons - a crooked finger, a spiral staircase - if they can be both human and not, both beautiful and terrifying.

Ava asks, What do you want, Beatrice?

(Tell me and I’ll give it to you. Tell me and I’ll build you a home there. Tell me and I’ll rearrange the universe to make it all fit, angels and demons be damned. Tell me it’s me. Me. Me.)
